This has just happened in my x type 56 plate. My neighbour who has his own garage had a look and got a metre length of cable from an old lamp, "took the blue cable but either that or the brown would do" anyway he took one of the reg plate light covers off and removed the bulb and stuck one end of the cable ( stripped of course) into the bulb socket and dropped the other end of the cable on to the ground, he pushed the boot release button under the "jaguar strip sign and the boot opened. The cable in the boot panel has either disconnected or broken and control was not earthed causing malfunction. Wire will be repaired tomorrow. Hope this helps.
