MK 10 HD8 Carb Mixture Problem

Featured Replies

I have a 1966 MK 10 which I only bought recently so I'm no expert with these cars.  It's running rich, I've figured out how one is supposed to adjust the mixture (wind out the adjusting screw until the jet is level with the 'bridge' in the carb body and then wind it in 2 1/2 turn to get to the starting point), however the mechanism for raising and lowering the jet only works on the front carb.  Obviously I need to remove the jet unit housing to see what the problem is.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what problem(s) I might find inside?

I'm just going round in circles at the moment and seem to be making things worse as now it won't even idle.

Thanks in advance

Neil.

Thanks for your thoughts, I plan to remove the problem carbs and see what's causing the jet to stick.  I have heard that these carbs are prone to sticking if you don't use a lead free additive and I don't know what's been used previously.   I'm used to setting up twin carbs on my MGB & Alpine and, I hope, 3 carbs is only 30% more complex.

Now the car won't idle or tick over at all so I need to do something.

Well I've fiddled again and sorted the badly adjusted carbs (I think it was my fault all along), the car now runs much better although I'd still prefer the idle speed to be a bit more than the 500rpm in the manual.  I now need to run the car for a while and inspect the plugs intermittantly to check the colour and adjust the mixture accordingly.

I think I also have a problem with the electric choke as it blows back occasionally (the timing is as per the manual), perhaps a manual conversion?

Thanks for everyones comments, they helped and made me feel confidant enough to tackle the carbs.

Thanks to all for replies.  I've now moved on from the carb issue.  I bought new needles which helped slightly....changed the air filter which helped slightly... but they're still rich.  I've now fitted a CSI distributor which has helped the performance.  Revving still prodicewd black smoke so I'm now cleaning the plugs and going for a run after weakening the carbs a little.  However, it's looking like rebuilt carbs are on the cards.
