had the same problem on my x-type estate turned out to be the fan speed controller unit cost me £80 to fix.

A lot of work has been done on this car, including: New radiator New coil packs Four new wheel bearings New bonnet release cable New battery New transfer box Two new front tyres 142k miles on the clock. £2000 ovno.
