Diesel running problems

Featured Replies

I boughta high mileage x type diesel march last year..it had done 184000 but ran fantastic...immediately after I got it home I was offered a x type estate which was what I originally wanted so I sold my x type saloon on..

anyway to cut a long story short I ended up back with my x type saloon...it has now covered 188000 miles but ran rough and was belching out black smoke.

immediately I saw a split intercooler pipe from the egr down to the intercooler so I bought a new egr valve and replaced the pipe and immediately after blasting the car up the a1 the black smoke has now ceased but I do find the car stutter between 1500-2000rpm...it revs all the way through and has bags of power but does

not like pottering about and cruising at any speed...just wondering if anyone could shed some light..im doubting its a fuel filter as the car revs all the way through and the air filter looks fine...its almost as if the mixture isn't right??

I have noticed that when I slow down the rev counter does not drop below 1000rpm where every one I have drove would drop down to 750-800rpm.

I do not have any warning lights on and it starts first thing hot or cold...im educating that it may be a air flow meter but do not know how to test one or where it is..

any clues??

hi just had the very same thing new pipe but did not change the egr

put a blanking plate in at the cost of £3 now runs like a bird

hi take the battery cover off and under the air intake unit is a pipe make sure this is on

the air unit was off when they done the egr and the pipe can be forgot to be put back on

 easy to do

Hi trevor.

yes I have checked that just now as the pipe was already off before I did the egr valve..the pipe goes straight up to the air intake pipe.

is that the air flow meter on that pipe or is it down below where the egr valve is at the bottom of that pipe?

Going to dig a new fuel filter out tomorrow and put that on as I have never changed it.

My other x type diesel ticks over lower than this one when the car comes to a stop which I find out...its almost as if a choke is on slightly...anyway besides the fuel filter im thinking of trying the air flow meter.

hi on the side of air flow unit that goes past the battery there is a small rubber tube that you just push on

if you look at the battery top cover to the left you will see it looks like a little tube with a larger bit of rubber on the top  just

push it back into the hole let me know if you have any luck some times that pipe can split as well or perrish

Trevor I wonder if you could shed a little more light on the EGR blanking. I'm blanking my x type diesel this Friday and wondered if there was any need to clean the EGR thoroughly before fitting the blanking plate or does the plate render the EGR useless? Any help would be brilliant. Thanks, hope I'm not hijacking your post paul.
