Radio code for 2000 S Type

After disconnecting the battery we need to reset the radio code.

Unfortunately the numbers someone has written in the owner's manual do not work, so we are locked out.

I have read the helpful instructions on the forum about this topic, but they seem to relate to the 2003 model. So for example my radio does not have an AMem button.

Does anyone know of a reliable quick fix for this irksome issue?

Please note this request is for the 2000 model, 3 litre v6.
