X-Type Estate Tailgate won't open

A new twist on the X-Type boot that won't open....I have a 2008 Estate and the tailgate will not open, either using the remote fob or the release button. I guess that the solenoid operating the lock release mechanism has failed.

Problem is I can't see any way to release the lock from the inside of the car.  You can take a bit of the inside tailgate trim off - but to get all the trim off the tailgate needs to be open.
