Jaguar xk convertible 2006 buying guide.

Featured Replies

Hi my name is Jarrod and I am new to the forum. I am on the verge of buying a 2006 xk convertible and was wondering if any of you kind fellows would give me any tips on what to look for. The car is low mileage but has had quite a few owners (5 to be exact) in its short life which means either its a problem car or it has been a one summer car for its previous owners. Have looked into warrantees but they seem expensive and a lot of them don't seem to be worth the paper they are written on once you look into it and find out what they don't cover. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance Jarrod.

Any advice would be apreciated as I am hoping to sign on the dotted line at some point this weekend!!

Hi Jarrod,

Welcome to the forum and potential ownership.  I can't talk with authority on the XK (although would love to own one myself - maybe a few years time).  When I bought my S-Type last year (4.2 V8 Sport (faster than the XK ;) )), I knew next to nothing about the brand other than I loved the retro styling and wanted a V8.  I did some research online but didn't have a mechanic mate in my back pocket.  I settled for an AA inspection of the car before signing on the dotted line.  Because the car was more than 8 years old I had to opt for the full (more costly) inspection, which combined with it being the 4.2l cost me £272.00 (discounted for AA member) but it basically gave me some peace of mind with a 3rd party inspection.

Depending on your budget it could be the way to go.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Best regards,

Dave

Thanks dave that's not a bad idea. The car does come with a 30 day warentee from the dealer which I am considering extending but I guess it wouldn't hurt for me to get the aa to give it the once over

Thanks for your reply!!

Hi Trevor,

Only some slight niggles like the reverse/dip mirror has a mind of its own and sometimes shows me the sky instead of the curb

Engine needs to idle for 4/5 seconds before I pull away or it stalls, oh and the glove box lock barrel flew out and dropped on the floor the other day which made me jump ha ha, but nothing apart from that..

Jarrod.

Well done , I bought my xk 4.2 in July ,again had plenty of little trips with the roof down .

I've had no problems with mine apart from a squeal from the fan/belt, but this goes as soon as it's warmed up ! And when I took it for a free pre mot check I needed the two front flexy brake hoses changed as they had rusted and would fail next years mot,( I had them done in my local garage and it was only £150 for the two , inc fitting )

I've got 51,000 miles on mine and one owner before me ! It's an 06 plated vehicle .

It's kept in a warm dry garage and only used very infrequently at the moment, but I do give it a wipe over with a dry cloth most days and I dream of another hot summer next year !

Happy Jag ownership .

Cheers

When I was about to buy my XKR I found the local Jaguar dealer and arranged for them to give a clean bill of health before buying....if a vendor took exception to this...walk away!

Fortunately they gave mine a 'thumbs up' and that was a year ago....only one minor prob since which cost about £90 to remedy...love the car.
