X-type estate.

Hi, I am currently researching the x-type estate as I am looking to buy one. It will be my first Jaguar so I am looking for advice on what to look for when buying. I have around £5000 to spend, my annual milage is 10000 miles, mainly shorter runs. I am thinking about getting a petrol as i don't won't to destroy a diesal turbo with short trips. Would my thinking be correct in this area? Or should I just go for the more popular diesal? What common faults should I look for? I would also prefer automatic are they any good? I normaly have ford and do most of the repairs myself to save money so I would also be looking to be doing this on a jag, are parts expensive?

A lot of questions, sorry, this is my first port of call so any help is appreciated.

Hi Dave, and welcome to the club.

Both the diesel engines fitted to the x type are well tried and robust engines, so personally I would not have any qualms.

Having said that, I had a 2.5 AWD Petrol manual and found it rather good, and a very good road holder.  On a long trip I was getting around 35 mpg driving steadily and about 24 mpg on shorter trips.

You can find some reasonably priced parts for the x type, and some Ford parts are compatible.

There is a JOC meet at Gaydon on the 19th September, and there will be quite a few X Type owners there.

Regards,

Peter.

I've had both diesel and petrol x types. I would say at 10000 miles you could take your pick of either fuels. If you go for the petrol, go for the 3.0. It's more fun and is more economical than the 2.5 or 2.1. If you go for the diesel, go for the 2.2.

From experience the diesels are a little more prone to problems. i.e. egr faults, turbo actuator problems, map sensor issues etc.

If your willing to get your hand dirty they can all be sorted relatively cheaply.

Waist seals on the windows are renowned for corrosion and on the estates cost about £160 to £200 for a set so look out for them when you go viewing.

The top of the range sovereign has all the toys. Closely followed by the sports premium then the se, sport then classic.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it. The turbo on my current ford has been a nightmare so i will probably go back to petrol. I will take a look at the 3.0. Can anyone tell me the difference between AWD and 4WD? Ive been reading up and it seems a little confusing. Thanks.

Absolutely nothing. 4wd and awd are the same thing, unless you have six wheels lol.

Only common problem with the 3.0 is the transfer box is a bit femmer. Personally I've never had a problem but I do know of some one that was on his third before he went over to an S type.
