I'm looking to get a modern, comfortable car to squire my wife about in and an S Type seems to be one (of the very few) we both agree on.

I do all the work my cars need doing myself and to be honest a modern (to me) car does worry me a little. So I'm joining up here to learn as much as I can before going to look at any. I'm heartened to hear that they rust quite well, familiar ground..  Anyway I'll leave all that for the model specific section. In the meantime, hello all.

Hi Ralph, and welcome to the club.

The s type is a great car, comfortable, stylish and quite quick in all versions.

I come from the era of adjustable spanners and lump hammers, and don't get oily hands any more.  But I do have a good mechanic!

A late model S type  - I have a 2.7 Diesel on an 07 plate - is a good buy and better still with a low mileage.  The diesel has a cam belt which should be changed at 105k.

There are quite a few members with a lot of knowledge of these modern cars and will give you some very good advice.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter, thank you for the welcome.

I'm actually looking at the lower end of the scale, up to £1.5k. Not enough for a diesel but I prefer petrols anyway, I've got an old diesel Golf for going to work etc. so fuel is not so much of a worry. It will have to a manual as well, I've driven various autos and they're just not for me.

Hi Ralph,

There are plenty of inexpensive S Types around, and quite a few with the 2.5 V6 engine which is the engine also used in the X Type, and is rather a good engine and not as thirsty as the 3.0 litre.

manual S Types are not too plentiful, but can be found, and if you can get one with a straight body and rust free sills, an owner with you skills can do the work on it to keep it going.

Regards,

Peter.

Hello, again. Sorry for not replying to you Peter, various events put getting another car on the back burner for a while.

However this week I bought a 2002 X200 Sport with a manual 'box, three weeks MOT and an DSC/ABS fault, happy days.. I have been fixing various lesser issues the last few days and hope to get to the bottom of the DSC/ABS fault this weekend. My fears have eased a little, it is only nuts and bolt plus some electronics after all.

Hi Ralph,

Success!

The DSC/ABS notice sometimes pops up on my s type and then disappears.  You will find out what it is with your experience - and I guess it will be nothing serious.

Regards,

Peter.
