X Type starter motor

Hi All

i am new to the Forum and was wondering if anyone can help.

i need to fit a new starter motor to my x type 2l diesel and have been told it has to be done at a garage.

is this so, or can i do it myself,been told it can only be done from above by removeing air box ,battery and housing several pipes

and then have to have arms like rubber to get to the starter itself.

surely there is an easier way, PLEASE HELP
