Looking for x-type

Featured Replies

Hello. I have recently come into possession of a 59 plate x-type in wonderful condition. It was my father in laws car with only one previous owner. He was a Jaguar enthusiast and actually worked at the factory in Birmingham many years ago. Sadly the car must be sold, if you are interested please PM me and I can provide you with details. JG

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for all your advice as I look around for my new x-type. I've tested quite a few in the last week or so, and its narrowed it down quite a lot for me.

One thing I hadn't considered is the semi-auto gearbox on the 2.2D models. I tried one and really liked it very much - but they make me nervous as I have always heard horror stories about costly repairs and such like if they fail - and its seems that sooner or later they do on a lot of cars… A quick scout around online seems the x-type is not the most reliable of auto gearboxes. The car I tried had done 98k… I also noticed the front tyres were more worn than the rear ones, which I wondered might be something to do with the gearbox (namely its instance acceleration and breaking capabilities).

Can member advise whether there are tips for keeping the auto gearboxes running smoothly - or are they just a failure waiting to happen…?

Cheers

Nathan

Nathan,

no manufacturer is totally reliable, I had an Audi that went through 2 DSG gearboxes sub 100 k and I drove it like a Nun, the auto on my X type is perfect and has an oil change every year even though Jag say it's lifetime, my first Jag did 200k on one gearbox with no issues, as I've said before, cars need good regular maintenance, lowish mileage and good history are one route to reliability in my opinion.

Cheers

Thanks Andrew. For sure I know nothing is always reliable - I guess what I'm asking is perhaps an auto is more likely to experience problems than manual. Changing the fluid every hear is a good tip though, and sounds like it keeps yours running smoothly, so thanks for that...

Cheers

No worries, Nathan,

It is difficult to know what's best, having said that, I've had more issues with German gearboxes than anything else. One thing I would say is that I'm pretty sure Jaguar are a manufacturer that has probably put more autos in cars than most, so, reliability should be up there with the best, I've not had any issues with them.

good luck

Thanks Andrew, and very well put. It's certainly great to hear you've not had any issues. They are certainly a blast to drive! Appreciate your help.

Hi folks, has anyone ever had any dealings with this dealer? http://www.ultimatejaguar.co.uk - they are not a jaguar main dealer, just enthusiasts… They seem to have a very good reputation, but there is nothing like first hand evidence, if anyone has any. Thanks.
