Hi there I have a 2000 s-type 3l petrol auto I was just wanting to know if anyone knows of a common fault with the cooling system as I have noticed today there is a leak somewhere that keeps leaking then not leaking e.g. It was leaking while driving it today but when it was stood running it wasn't leaking  any advice would be gratefull also if anyone knows of any other common fault with theses jaguars it will be good to know  thanks

Expansion tanks have a tendency to crack, but with mine this resulted in a leak once you stopped driving, as opposed to when it was driving.

Hi thanks. The leak is coming where the pipes are at the front I think as the water was all over he altanator belt and with it not leaking when stood it's annoying because I carnt see where it's coming from. Thanks for your help 

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Water was leaking from the front seal of the water pump and dripping onto the drive belts only when running . Car wasn't a s type but might be worth a look. 

Not the expansion tank then, which leaks from the back.

There's a lot going on at the front of the engine and difficult to identify what's what, I have an annoying squeaking and haven't been able to isolate it, even using an automotive stethoscope. Could be belt, power steering, water pump or alternator. I may start a separate thread about this with an audio file if I can work out the technology!

So good luck with tracking down your leak, water pump or dodgy hoses could be likely suspects 

Hi Jonny,

I bought my second S Type a few weeks back and started to get Low Coolant warnings soon afterwards. Having read some of the threads on this and other sites I went looking for the the usual suspects but with no success. As fortune would have it after I had taken the car for a short run to get it to normal operating temperature / pressure I found the leak was emanating from a small diameter (approx 20mm) pipe on the Throttle Body - part of the Cold Start system I think. The leak was on the underside of the hose and very near to the spring retaining clip holding the pipe to the Throttle Body.

As a temporary fix while awaiting delivery of a new pipe I moved the spring clip out of the way (making sure to not let it slip into a difficult to retrieve location), cleaned off the oily residues and applied a couple of 50-75mm strips of insulation tape (no room to wind the tape on directly from the roll so had to gently tease each strip into position over the hole) and refitted the spring clip.

Worked and continues to work like a dream - the new hose is still in it's box and I can do that job at a later time.
