XK8/XKR torque converter lock-up system

Featured Replies

Me again, with the 'surging' XKR. Update is that local Jag dealer ran a diagnostic, and suggested I find a specialist (clearly ruling themselves out!!). Anyway, I've since learnt the 6-speed gearbox has a mechanism (clutch arrangement?) that locks up the torque converter when the car goes into higher gears.. Knowing this the symptoms fit well with this mechanism locking-unlocking causing the surging sensation at high gear/low engine speed/gentle acceleration-incline. So it'e going in for specialist gearbox diagnostics next week - fingers crossed!! Does this problem now ring any bells with anyone? Cheers. Richard

Update today.  Car was checked over by the auto-gearbox specialist. They say there's nothing wrong with the gearbox so I'm back to square 1. I was convinced that was the problem but at least they ruled it out. So my search for a specialist in XKR engine management is my next port of call if anyone can suggest someone??

The only person I can recommend is Chris Isle, The Jag Specialist at Doncaster. He is also a gearbox specialist. Worth at least a phone call.

Ok great thanks Jim, I'll certainly look him up. The latest advise I've had is to check the O2 sensors so I might get this done first.. Cheers. Richard

Richard, I have an '03 XKR and it seems it might have similar issues. Around 50 MPH with stable speed, the gearbox cycles between gears. Does this ring true, or does my issue warrant a separate topic? Good luck anyway!

Hi Mark

Apologies for the delay in coming back to you. I'm not sure that your symptoms of cycling between the gears at 50mph is the same as mine but the causes may be!! In the case of mine, the surging comes in when the gearbox has changed up into 3rd and above. Under low acceleration or pulling up an incline the surging starts when the box changes up and revs drop to between 1000 and 1500rpm. If you try and 'push through' with a little more throttle surging worsens until the revs get > 2000rpm. Problem is on low throttle settings the box will change up as speed increases and put the engine back in the 1000-1500rpm zone. Lots of throttle or use of the J gate to keep revs above 2000rpm and you don't notice the surging. No warning lights or codes up. I've had lot's of people now who have checked it out.. Still no further forward. Cheers. Richard
