Is there a way to override the lock when the transmission is in Park. I need to have the car (1990 XJ6) towed for service. It will not fire and the transmission selector is in Park. it won't move unless the car is started. Help much appreciated!

In the XE and XF there's a lever located under the plastic engine cover that you can pull to mechanically retract the parking pawl in the transmission. Not sure if this applies to XJs but it'll be worth a look. Towing service companies should also know about this - JLR issue recovery instructions to them, but I guess not all bother to read these.

Do you have a star shaped indent on the gear surround? Cars of your era did not have a lever to release the transmission.

Nothing on the gear surround. However, i depressed the brake pedal while turning the key. The engine started and the shift lever was released. Finally back on the road with no problems after 4 months!

That’s what your supposed to do, so no defect after all.
