My x type on 2 occasions shown gearbox fault warning light. If you switch the engine off and them restart after a few minutes the fault clears itself and then runs normally for a few weeks.

Does anybody have any ideas of what the problem.

It's an automatic gearbox.

When I have had intermittent faults like that its been a battery problem,

Due to my not using the car regularly or just for very short journeys.

Is Your car used every day?

Battery may be low.

When was the ATF last changed and if recently, with what fluid?

Also what year is the car? Have you read the codes as it may be a pressure sensor gone south

Looking at your post count, the above post is your first and only post.

Surprised a turbo/DPF fault will cause the gearbox MIL to come on, the two aren't connected usually.

The moral of your tale really says buy a petrol though.............

I came on here because i was looking for tips on where to get an  alternator, but i saw David's post and as I had encountered the same problem a couple of years ago, I thought I should chip in and give him some hope that it isn't his gearbox that is the problem.

Hopefully this explains why it is my first post and I am not  an AI bot or an interloper or whatever you seem to think I am. It was an honest attempt to steer a bloke with a problem with his Xtype in the right direction as I was helped by other people in forums when I was looking for the cause of my problem.

FYI while I am no mechanic, the ghist of what causes the gearbox warning light to come on is: The turbo actuator meets resistance because the turbo vanes are caked in soot because the EGR valve has decided to recycle waste gases. It then sends a message to the computer that the turbo is in danger and kicks the car into limp home mode, The car cant get out of second gear which is what creates the signal that it is a gearbox fault. However it is a turbo caked in soot fault. 

I agree with you that petrol cars are better but they don't get 50mpg and they dont do 150k+ miles which is why a diesel can be handy.

Hope this explains why I decided to make my first  post today..I didnt realise i needed permission to try and help out, i offer my profuse apologies and beg forgiveness.

You presume correctly, i was replying to you and it is indeed a mystery as to where your post has gone - maybe a moderator has hidden it?

I get what you're saying about the turbo putting the ECU into Limp Mode and causing the gearbox MIL to light now, i havae similar on my Honda at the moment due to some idiot topping the box with DW-1 instead of the correct fluid.

Generally i get 22-32mpg out of my S Type but that is on LPG so only 80p/L - equivalent to 40-60mpg roughly in terms of cost. As for life expectancy, my last petrol car was sold with 238k on the clock from new and still giving good performance, economy, power and not using any fluids. Traded that one against my Honda (142k from new and likely to do double that easily) although thanks to the aforementioned ATF problem, that's only doing ~16mpg or 10mpg less than the V6 Volvo with 238k did!

Either way the OP still hasn't responded to my first response about the ATF and codes.............

Hi David 21. I had the same trouble with my x type automatic. Was advised to change  gear box oil. Did that. Problem fixed. That was ove 3 months ago and still ok
