Hi , I have had my XF 2.2D Sportbrake 2013 since 2019 and have had many strange messages on the dash but this is a new one!

Driving along at around 30 to 40mph and all of a sudden the red triangle warning flashes up and the engine cuts out I had not hit anything and not gone over any large potholes. (The Bonnet Airbags had not activated so that was ok) Tried to restart and it would not so turned off then back on and tried again also did not start so turned off and locked car then tried again and it did start and carried on normally. Put code reader on when got home and no codes?

Anybody else had this problem, I used to have many strange electrical errors until I found the dreaded corroded pins in the middle junction box in drivers footwell, once that was fixed and water pump connections modified I have never had any messages for several years now.

Any suggestions.

Phil

Hi Phil, the starting question here is how old is your battery? You say you have had the car since 2019 and therefore unless you have replaced the battery during your ownership, it is now past its "best by" date. Typically a battery in a modern car should be replaced at around 5 years old.

The battery in a modern car does so much more than provide the power to crank the engine, it also needs to maintain a sufficient voltage under all conditions to maintain the feed to the electronics. A low battery voltage, due to age / failing, can cause a multitude of false / spurious error messages and lights.

Let us know if the battery is aged or replaced.

Had a new battery in 2022, fault disappeared after removing F36 fuse in rear BCM but has now started doing it again but now undriveable as it cuts out all the time :( so fault went away for 10 months. Garage is looking at it today hopefully its just a failing sensor behind the front bumper area.

Also never had any of the random error messages since the new battery and corroded pins fix.

Hi Philip
Hopefully the garage will be able to sort it. Just a thought but was the 2022 replacement battery an AGM? If it was replaced with a flooded cell battery it could well have failed or even a cheap AGM may have started to fail if it has been subject of frequent stop/start cycles.

Good luck
John

To me it sounds like the pedestrian detection sensor in the front bumper is likely the culprit, especially since pulling the F36 fuse (which probably disables that system) made it go away temporarily - hope the garage already resolved it!
