I have an odd one for you if anyone can help.

I have an x-type estate (for one week and my first jag :D )

Everytime I start the engine the tail gate glass pops open.  Not urgent but it is getting a little annoying.

Anybody any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Steve

  • 4 months later...

I joined only yesterday, having bought an X type estate 2 months ago. This weekend, for no apparent reason, I suddenly experienced exactly the same situation - turn key in ignition to the third position and the Tailgate glass pops open. I have to start the car, then walk around to the back to lose the tailgate. not a crisis, but rather irritating , and it completely defeats the security of the drivers door only opening on the first click of the key (re-assuring for my wife returning to the car at night)

Did you ever solve the problem - I notice no one has replied to you with any suggestions.

In most other respects I like the car very much - initial criticisms are confined to the tyre noise - much worse than in my previous car, a much older Mercedes estate, and I do find the engine is noisy. Oh, and the headlights are terrible!

Thanks and best regards

Welcome to the Club, Barry.

There are some curious issues with the tailgate, which, never having had an estate car of any kind, I would not even try a guess at.

In respect of the tyre noise, some tyres are noisier than others and tyre pressure can have a bearing.

I had an X Type saloon [2.5 petrol] running on Pirellis and it was very quiet.

I hope you and Steve get the tailgate problem solved.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks Peter, that's very interesting. Maybe I have been spoiled by running six cylinder petrol engine cars (Volvos and Mercedes) for the last 20 years. I bought a Volvo 960 which had Pirelli P6000's, and then a Mercedes using the same make, different size, and I was horrified at the amount of road noise they created. In both cases significant improvements came with a switch to Michelins.

I bought the X type shod with 225/45 X 17 Pirellis , but then fitted 16" wheels with winter tyres - Goodyear and Continentals - that has reduced the noise, but not to the same extent as on my previous cars.

Maybe I'm just a fussy old man!

Thanks again and best regards,

Barry

Hi Barry and welcome to the club!

I have found this extract from the Owners manual which may help.

Luggage Compartment Locks
If the vehicle alarm system is armed and the luggage compartment is opened using the key transmitter the alarm will not sound. The system will be rearmed when the lid is closed, provided the vehicle has not been disarmed.

Estate
Open the tailgate by pressing the release button 2 under the tailgate trim.
The tailgate can also be opened by pressing the luggage compartment button 1 on the key transmitter. The luggage compartment will be illuminated when the tailgate is opened.

Note: If required, the key transmitter can be reprogrammed so that button 1 will open the Estate tailgate glass, instead of the tailgate. Contact your Jaguar Dealer/Authorised Repairer to have this feature enabled.

Opening the tailgate glass
The tailgate glass can be opened separately from the complete tailgate. Press the release button 3, located on the reverse of the tailgate glass handle, and lift the tailgate glass.

I can only imagine it may be a fault with the fob or the programming of the fob.
Let us know if you find out anymore info on this one

Regards    Trevor

Hi Barry,

I had Company cars for 30 years and soon got used to getting someone to sorting the problems out, although I did become expert with the Ford Escort  ---  11 of them!   I learnt  how to cure the road noise by turning up the radio.

Since I retired almost 15 years ago looking after the car has been a priority and although I have a very good mechanic to do the servicing, small jobs are done on the drive.

After a Rover Sterling from 8 months old till it was 12 the only car [living in Birmingham and always having British cars] had to be a Jaguar, and I must say I am enjoying it.  First a 2.5 litre all wheel drive x type, and now a very nice s type  2.7 Litre diesel which goes like the Chariot of Jehu -- " verily like the  wind."

Be fussy -- the prerogative of age!

Regards,

Peter.

Hallo to all - Very many thanks for all your replies - it's good to know I am not the only one to have experienced this oddity.

I will follow up the various threads and see what I can make work and report success (not failure I hope) in due course.

Thanks again and best regards,

Barry

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks Kev. These electrical/electronic faults do frustrate me. I have not had time to properly investigate yet, but a week or so ago I tried locking the drivers door immediately after entering the car before inserting the key in the ignition, and noticed that the tailgate glass did not pop open when I started the engine. I did that a few times with the same result, and now I am using the car normally, and so far, touch wood, the fault has not re-occurred. No doubt, having now said that, it will go wrong tomorrow morning!

Best regards,

Barry

I have the same tailgate glass problem on my x type, only when wet. Over the next few weeks I will also point out some of the other problems with the x type I have encountered, not my favourite car I must say.
