The V6 lump in the S-Types is basically a collaborative design between various manufacturers (think it's Ford, Peugeot and Maybe Citroen?).  It's meant to be pretty bullet proof and mine certainly feels very smooth although it is quite a low mileage example at 70K.  Gearboxes are meant to be sealed for life but it seems several people on here have had their gearbox oil changed.

If you get one with a good service history preferably Jaguar main dealer or independent specialist, you can't go far wrong. Mine has 84k on clock with no oil usage or smoke from exhaust. Remember cambelt should be changed at 105k, or 10 years, so make sure it has been done or factor that into your cost. They cost £375 at main dealer.

As with all S-types check for rust around sills. It is recommended that oil is changed in gearbox so see if it has been done. Look out for one with good spec.

love mine,  engine and box superb .

Also check for exhaust fumes/smell getting into the cabin through the vents, it's either a fractured flexi usually on the left bank exhaust (expensive to fix) or the exhaust from the fuel burning heater (easyish fix) needs replacing.

In common with all S-Types, if you can, get the sill covers off and check the sills for corrosion.

thanks for the swift replies guys i appreciate it

i will be looking round for the rest of the week to see what is available

  2. thank you for the reply Peter

i do hope all 3 got to be bunked up with a rather large effeminate s*x pest who calls them "Tracy" "Lucy" & "Mary Sue" and they dread the lights out bell!

from what i have been reading on here and around the internet the pre DPF are up to 2005 and have the turned down exhausts but i am not too worried with the DPF anyway as its a reason to give it a good day out and a blast on the motorway,

  3. hi folks

i have noticed while looking at v6 diesels (2.7) that there seems to be quite a few that need engines and a couple of them need gearbox's as well?

im liking the look of the S type but am a bit worried that the engines are weak?

also i have seen "sandwich" mentioned but am at a loss to what that means?

any help appreciated guys as what to look out for and the price on 02 - 06 models can vary from £850 to £4k but i have around £2500 to spend i have also been looking at the X Type 2.0 diesel but they dont seem to have the high spec the S has

thanks for any help or advice i very much appreciate it

  4. i had a 2012 XF but due to stopping work and health issues i had to sell it to pay bills

now 2 years on i fancy an X or S model in diesel and auto but am a bit put off by the amount of cars for sale needing engines or engines and gearbox's especially the 2.7 V6 ?

anyway here i am and im looking for as much info before buying

    cheers and hello folks
