Thanks for your reply. Sadly since Aug 9th you are the only person to have replied. I am a member of quite a lot of car forums and all bar this one have members who can't wait to help. So, not wanting to fall into any expensive pitfalls I bought a Lexus as those guys were more than helpful on what issues real owners face rather than having to rely on popular media generic statements.

Hi, I'm looking at getting myself a cheap old XJ of about 1998-2001 kind of age at around £1000 as I've had enough of "sensible" "economical" cars.

I don't mind if it's V8 or straight 6, sport or executive but I don't really want to fall in to any pitfalls.

Can you help me in avoiding some with some advise on what to look out for?

Hello, I'm new to the site and haven't yet bought my Jaguar. It will be an old XJ of some sort.
