  1. Thanks Rod. Sounds like I'll have to go that way eventually. Cheers.
  2. I've had a very similar problem - x type diesel, 2008, 2.2 auto, 130k miles, going into limp mode with amber light and gearbox fault on the display. I've had diagnostics done by a jaguar independent dealer (who were convinced in advance that it would be the turbo) but nothing comes up and I've since driven the car with absolutely no problems at all. But it does knock one's confidence a bit... If anyone has any further thoughts or experience on this please do let me know - I've had another thread going on this on the forum too along similar lines. In the meantime I've got a simple diagnostic tool in the glovebox so I can try and get some clue as to what the problem might be if/when it happens again. Cheers Liam
  3. Thanks folks. I found this one - any thoughts appreciated: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/162240318776?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=40176066202&rlsatarget=pla-280078160857&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=1007131&device=c&campaignid=738210941&crdt=0
  4. Hi everyone, Rather than pay my mechanic £60 can anyone provide an exact model of code reader I can buy online? A link to one for sale for a decent price would be brilliant. Where do I actually plug it in? (I am a total novice...) Thanks Liam
  5. Thanks so much Peter. Yes doing the maths it doesn't look pretty... Their diary is well booked up so my guess is negotiating might be tricky - people obviously have confidence in their work and use them regularly, which of course does count for a lot. But I will have a look around... Any other thoughts from other members most welcome. Thanks. L
  6. Hi everyone, Driving an 08 plate X-type 2.2d auto (116500 miles) which has now on three occasions displayed a flashing amber warning light with 'gearbox fault' and gone into 3rd gear/limp home mode. These occasions have been spread over a 2/3 month period and drive with no problems whatsoever at all in-between. Over Christmas the car was parked up in the cold for a couple of weeks so the battery also failed, so replaced it a few weeks ago anyway, and thought this might be the root of the gearbox problem - but two weeks ago same gearbox fault again. All I do is pull over, turn the car off and on again and its then totally fine. Drives sweet as you like, no problems at all. Obviously if recurring problem, or risking potential damage to elsewhere in the engine, I want to get it sorted. Quick chat with the local independent jag man and he thought probably Turbo or EGR valve needing replacing - which sounds plausible... But he wants to charge me £65 plus vat for a code readout, and then ballparked £350 for a new turbo, plus 3 hours labour, all with the dreaded Vat. Anyone else had/come across issues of this nature? - Is it urgent/am I causing damage to the car driving it until fixed? And can anyone advise if this sort of ballpark price checks out? The jag dealer have serviced the car for me, do excellent work and have many faithful customers, but this the first major repair I've had on this car so keen to hear if the price sounds reasonable. Thanks for any tips in advance. Cheers, Liam
  7. I've been having a similar feeling about my x-type. I drive an S trim, so my screen is not heated (except by the fan, obvs) - do you have an actual glass heater filament? My glass is just a bit scratched. When I bought my car the original wipers were on and they seemed pretty tacky to me. I've replaced them with Bosch and might replace the screen. Having new headlights made all the difference, of course. With a relatively low driving position for a saloon, and the hemmed in feeling from the low roof, maybe this contributes to the problem. I turned down the inside/dashboard lighting to low which helps quite a bit too. But what is sure is that night driving on unlit country roads is the only thing I would really claim as a major flaw on the x-type... Although the prevelance of SUVs blinding other drivers LR and centre these days is not Jags fault! On that, if you have an SUV coming towards you and you can see the lights are higher/brighter than most, even though their are dipped, if you flash them a few times I have found several will dim their lights further - apparently this is an easy option on some models of SUV.
  8. Hi everyone, I've upgraded my x-type headlights and given them a good clean, which all makes a big difference - but it appears there is a lot of dirt and condensation on the inside of the the headlights. Can anyone advise on how (or whether...!) an amateur DIY-er like myself should try and get inside the headlight covers? Should have got it done when they replaced the headlights, I guess... I can always take it back to the garage when its MOT time or something... Any tips appreciated! Thanks! Nathan
  9. Yes sounds sensible. Service and filters always changed on the dot, no probs there. I'm hoping mine gets to 200k which would be a first for me with any car. Hope yours does the same - happy motoring.
  10. Thanks for this Dave. I'm not up to much car diy but are these filters/sensors something that should be changed under servicing? - or that I can request? I use a jag independent specialist not main dealer. Nathan
  11. Good to hear jimbo, I decided to have the terraclean done and it's been good - I posted more details on the thread you commented on earlier this week. My car now 8 years old and at 115k miles I figured probably worth going for the full clean but nowbtjays done it's great to hear millers will keep her running sweetly. Do you use premium fuel type or just regular esso? Nathan
  12. Hi everyone, earlier this week I had to drive to Cardiff for three days (about 275 miles each way) and finding myself with a few hours to spare I thought I'd go for the terraclean as the guy could fit me in at short notice. It has made a noticeable difference - crisper ride, no labouring in low gear, quicker acceleration, more torque - just generally sharper all round. Since I owned the car mpg has been 45 in all driving conditions, but the latest ride has gone above 50 which I had never achieved even on a straight motorway run. So not exactly a lottery winning difference but satisfying nonetheless. I paid £106 including vat on the 2.2 auto X type. I was pleased the guy asked for some background and any concerns or niggles on the car, and gave it a quick spin and a few revs, and checked under the bonnet before doing the clean - as he said any potential problems would be magnified by the clean and if I had any major concerns I shouldn't go ahead. As the car has always been faultless but just looking for longevity and smooth running, he said it would be fine - afterwards he told me that anyone who has ever had the service done by him has always been pleased with it, but he doesn't give customers the hard sell upfront. So that was a refreshing approach from a garage...! He also said additives were fine but not worth using now for a good while now I've done the terraclean. However he was adamant on using shell/esso/bp brand fuel, even if not premium. So to anyone in the Cardiff area I can recommend Autocraft Cardiff Ltd. Great service and price and above all very down to earth. Regards to all, Nathan
  13. Thanks folks - sound advice. Think I'll go for additive and see what difference that makes. Anyone tried redex or is that just the cheap ubiquitous option? cheers Nathan
  14. Hi everyone, anyone got experience with using terraclean on an xtype (or any other diesel engines?) I'm driving a 2.2 auto d which has clocked 115k - still averages 45 mpg so no concerns, but around £150 for keeping longevity and smooth running seems worth it - provided it works...! would be glad to hear any others' experiences using this method. Cheers nathan
  15. Hi everyone, Bit of silence from me on the Jag front - after much helpful advice from you guys I went with a 2.2d auto from 08 and its an absolute blinder. Love driving it. Will post some pics soon. Had a service and full health check from a independent specialist whilst it was still under dealer's warranty and it came through with flying colours and nothing to report. Except the tyres need replacing. I have never come across such an extraordinary collection of tyres available for one vehicle - I guess this is what happens with higher performance cars... I am on a bit of a budget and its safety first as far as tyres are concerned for me, with kids in the back - no racing etc.! Does anyone have any recommendations for tyres for the x-type and what difference can spending 4 times as much really make? Thanks. Nathan
  16. Thanks Barrie. That's really helpful. Yes I saw a guy fitting them on a YouTube video and don't fancy the job myself! Will lrave it to the garage. Appreciate your help. Nathan
  17. Hi Baz, I'm also a new X type owner and looking to upgrade headlights. Could you confirm the size (H1) and spec of the new bulbs you are so pleased with? Also did you fit them yourself and is that fairly straightforward? thanks! Nathan
  18. Thanks folks - I really appreciate your help and willingness to see the car - any other members from Lancashire please drop me a line. Thanks and best to all, Nathan
  19. Hi everyone, I've been chatting on the forum the last couple of weeks about looking for an x-type, and Peter suggested I could post any cars for sale which look good but are a bit far away from me for an initial viewing - (I am in Suffolk, which is frankly not a great place to buy a car…!) This car is in Blackburn, Lancashire - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201602151048362/usedcars?logcode=visc - I'm not sure where exactly but near there. I've spoken to the owner and the car has got an excellent service history, every 12 months on the dot. It was a demo car for a year and he has been the only owner since then. Its only an S model, but has some nice upgrades: full leather, heated seats, satnav... Its a very reasonable price, and basically the best 2.2D I've seen under £4k. I'd be so grateful to anyone who could pop over and have a look at it. It seems a lot to ask, but I am assured some members might be able to help, and hopefully I could return the favour for someone else sometime soon! Many thanks and best to all, Nathan
  20. Hi folks, has anyone ever had any dealings with this dealer? http://www.ultimatejaguar.co.uk - they are not a jaguar main dealer, just enthusiasts… They seem to have a very good reputation, but there is nothing like first hand evidence, if anyone has any. Thanks. Nathan
  21. Thanks Andrew, and very well put. It's certainly great to hear you've not had any issues. They are certainly a blast to drive! Appreciate your help. Nathan
  22. Thanks Andrew. For sure I know nothing is always reliable - I guess what I'm asking is perhaps an auto is more likely to experience problems than manual. Changing the fluid every hear is a good tip though, and sounds like it keeps yours running smoothly, so thanks for that... Cheers Nathan
  23. Hi everyone, Thanks again for all your advice as I look around for my new x-type. I've tested quite a few in the last week or so, and its narrowed it down quite a lot for me. One thing I hadn't considered is the semi-auto gearbox on the 2.2D models. I tried one and really liked it very much - but they make me nervous as I have always heard horror stories about costly repairs and such like if they fail - and its seems that sooner or later they do on a lot of cars… A quick scout around online seems the x-type is not the most reliable of auto gearboxes. The car I tried had done 98k… I also noticed the front tyres were more worn than the rear ones, which I wondered might be something to do with the gearbox (namely its instance acceleration and breaking capabilities). Can member advise whether there are tips for keeping the auto gearboxes running smoothly - or are they just a failure waiting to happen…? Cheers Nathan
  24. Thanks Peter - this is very helpful. Obviously opinions differ slightly but it seems the best thing is to go for the most recent model and if the DPF is there, just be aware of it and treat it accordingly. That's very reassuring as I would like to buy the most recent car I can afford, which is therefore more likely to have a DPF… (Incidentally, I got chatting to a chap who I happened to pass while he was cleaning an x-type V6 on a street corner the other day whose main advice was to buy the most recent car affordable...) Just out of interest, do you know if X-type exhausts have a different shape when DPF is fitted (like the S-type does…?) Would be a helpful thing to be able to clarify in viewing... Thanks so much for your help. Nathan
  25. Thanks! One other thing has come to my attention, and I've seen people post about it in relation to the S-type diesels, and that is a DPF on more recent models - from what I gather, some X-type Ds have it and some don't but does anyone know if there are some engines/plates onwards which definitely do? I saw Peter had posted in another thread about identifying an S-type with/without a DPF by the shape of the exhaust - does the same apply to an X-type? I can see in buying a second hand car it is the sort of thing a dealer/owner might not know and it does make a difference. I've also heard about some people removing the DPF as they lead to problems - but that MOT's now prevent this. But I assume the MOT requires a DPF only if it was on the car in the first place, and presumably it doesn't mean that ALL cars now have to be retro-fitted with one…? If two cars were all the same but one had DPF and one didn't, would members strongly advise one way or the other? Thanks and best wishes, Nathan
