  1. Good evening everyone.

I have not posted for some time, partly due to no mechanical disasters but also being rather busy looking after my wonderful father in law during his recent terminal illness and then the funeral, memorial, probate etc.

During this period the X Type saloon was left unused for some time and unfortunately the bonnet has suffered quite extensive damage to the lacquer in several places. Now we could get this re-sprayed but the car has little financial value so I am looking for a bonnet in good condition from a breakers or similar.

    My two questions are :

1/ Is the bonnet the same regardless of model for the early type ( the car is a 2003 SE 2.5 V6 metallic blue)

2/ Where would I find the paint code.

Hope this finds all members well and thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

    Regards

It also states that the car has start/stop, that didn't come in til the facelift models which was post 2011/12 I believe. Definitely seems a little suspect.

Have you tried putting the number plate into we buy any car. That should give the correct engine at least.

    Good call.

WBAC say it is a 4.2 V8 Supercharged! Another check site lists it as a 3l V Petrol...........................  :)

AskMID shows it as an SV8

Checking on the DVSA site for VED shows it as 2867cc     !!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you for your reply.

Consumption of 37mpg sounds good for a large and quick car, I average 27mpg in the Mercedes, up to 35mpg on a motorway run  :)

I am also trying to get a feel for common failures or issues on these cars, some of the modern MB Diesels are requiring replacement turbochargers at the 100,000 mile mark!

  4. I have searched on the Forum but cannot find any definitive guide on what to look for when buying a second hand Jaguar XF so am hoping for some first hand advice and experiences.

My leanings are towards the 3 litre petrol but there are very few for sale compared to the diesel version and trim wise my preference would be for a Premium Luxury / Portfolio model as we would find memory seats very useful.

Whilst not entirely ruling out a diesel model I am not a fan due to the complexity of modern diesel engines and the experience of friends having had turbocharger, EGR and DPF failures on a range of (generally German) diesel cars.

The other problem with looking for a diesel version is that they are often high mileage vehicles as hey have usually been run as company cars, I would, ideally be looking for a  car from 2009 with , hopefully around 100,000 miles or less. This would be my main commuting car (40 miles a day on fast A roads) for the next 5 years.

    Thanks in advance

  5. A little late in reply / follow up but I have only just found time to fit the "power fold" mirrors I acquired from eBay.

Swapping them over was fairly easy although I had to drill a hole for the mirror fold operating switch in the door card.

Having changed everything ...................Nothing happens in terms of folding, the replacement mirrors only adjust the glass angle and heat up.

The only thing of note is that they do fold manually (the original mirrors were fixed with no manual fold) and they also fold with very little effort, if there was a motor in there should there not be some resistance to moving by hand? The mirrors on my MB are virtually immovable until powered.

The mirrors as supplied look to be identical externally to the originals apart from being able to fold them manually, do the powerfold mirrors look different? If anyone has any part number for the normal and powerfold that would be helpful to cross-check.

    Many thanks as ever.

  6. Our 2003, 95,000 mile has no got the slickest of gear changes. It is particularly notchy when engaging first and second gear and the gate always feels a little imprecise .

First is even a little obstructive to engage at rest.

Is this a characteristic of this engine , gearbox and 4 wheel drive system or could it be wear in the gear change linkage or elsewhere? It does make driving the car around town rather less pleasant than it could be.

    Many thanks as ever.

  7. The search function did not give any definitive answer to this:

Our 2003 X Type 2.5 has electric mirrors but no power (or manual) fold option and has had the drivers mirror hit three times this year breaking the entire mirror then the replacement mirror casing.

I see a lot of power fold mirrors for sale on eBay etc, is it relatively easy to retrofit these? I assume a new wiring loom either side as well as a switch pack would be required?

    Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for the very quick and helpful response!

Yes the cabin filter was replaced, after a brief struggle with the wiper arms! A little penetrating spray and a puller sorted those out. I also found SGS when searching, as you say, measure the originals and order same!

I cannot find any record of a spark plug change in the car's records, is this an easy DIY job or one best left to a garage? I assume only 6 plugs? ( My MB V6 has 12!)

Forgive the rather dim question;, are all 2.5l X Types (and 3.0 l) 4 wheel drive? There are no badges on the car saying so.

  9. Well after a few hours spent on my partner's 2003 X Type saloon  recently I feel we are making progress!

The rather smelly cabin is much sweeter after using an air conditioning cleaner, the broken drivers side mirror has been replaced, headlamp performance is markedly improved after polishing the lens and fitting Osram Night breaker bulbs and I have also re-instated remote central locking / unlocking by simply buying a used remote from eBay for £12.50, swopping the key and immobiliser and re-synchronising it to the car.

The remaining irritation is the boot lid, the gas struts will only support it when fully lifted and it is quite a heavy panel. Would anyone have the part numbers and / or recommend a place to buy good quality replacements?

    Thanks in advance.

My MB is petrol but my local MB independent mentioned EGR valves to me when giving advice before I purchased. He says that gummed up / sticking EGR valves are a known problem and you can perform a "delete" modification on some engine types although it can throw an error that sometimes needs a session on Star to get around. I believe it takes him around an hour to remove/ refit and test, possibly longer if cleaning out a very badly coked one.

  11. I would first check all pipework and hoses that may have been disturbed are correctly fitted and also have not been damaged.  Assuming you had no such noise before the work was carried out it is hopefully just something simple.

Are there any other symptoms such as uneven idle, performance loss etc?

  12. Good afternoon all!

I come to the forum not as a Jaguar owner but as someone who will be helping to look after my partners X Type.

She is running a 2003 2.5 manual that has covered 88,000 miles and is in generally good condition having inherited it from her father when he gave up driving. I have already fixed a couple of minor issues, changed a smashed drivers mirror, changed the cabin filter etc but as a Mercedes owner I have little specific knowledge of these cars although I have a reasonable amount of mechanical knowledge (have re- built Landrovers and worked on other cars over the years) so I am hoping to be able to add something to the forum as well as learning.

There are a couple of things I need advice on but will look for the appropriate section to post if I cannot find he answers myself.

    A good weekend to all.

    Regards

    David
