Firstly thank you for help in advance,

I have experienced problems pulling away during the last month in the cold weather when the engine is cold, it wouldn't engage for a few seconds and I put it down to the transmission fluid not being vicous in the torque convertor, however this morning it wouldn't pull away at all and comes up with 'gearbox fault'.

What is this likely to be?

Many thanks

Welcome to the Club, Andrew.

I am not an engineer, but at a guess, I think the fault could be down to gearbox oil.  Some members have had the oil and filter changed at 75,000 miles, in spite of Jaguar saying that the gearbox is for life, and say that it has made a difference.

The could well be other members who will make some welcome suggestions,

Regards,

Peter.

So, I have been quoted £1800 + vat + a possible mechatronic unit at £1000 and told it was the gearbox sump that cracked as it is made from plastic and that they crack easily.

Could I not just replace the sump myself, and refill the box?

Hi Andrew,

That is a very big bill!  Is it from a Jaguar Main Dealer?

I am not an engineer/mechanic, but as an accountant  in a much earlier life, I would first be incllned to get another quote from an independent garage.

There is a list of recommended garages in the Jaguar Owners Lounge compiled by members.

There are members who have replaced the gearbox oil themselves, and I would think that if you could do that job yourself replacing the sump would not be beyond you.

Regards,

Peter.

I recently had the sump replaced it comes as a kit the gearbox filter is included in the sump, this was done by an independant and cost £350, the fault on mine was dripping oil on the drive which turned out to be a cracked sump.

Regards

Mike
