Front brakes binding

Featured Replies

Just changed the discs and pads , Back axle all ok. Did the EPB reset all looking good. Just finished the fronts  and car will hardly move , pedal slowly going to the floor and cannot apply park brake warning light has come on. Used the laser tool on the rear and a ratchet clamp on the front to retract the pistons no probs slid the caliper over the new discs no probs started the car pumped the brake pedal and it goes hard as it should but then starts slowly going to the floor. Can't see any fluid leaks so I am at a loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Garry, I'm not up on modern vehicles but the symptoms you describe would suggest to me the master cylinder seals are gone (what is the mileage?). I do hope this is not the case but I have found in the past that seal/servo problems tend to manifest themselves at the point of extreme conditions such as MOT tests (when they stamp on the brakes and is abnormal) or when replacing brake components and exercising/displacing the system components from their normal operational positions. It usually happens because the braking system was about to fail anyway but the extraordinary conditions/stresses have brought on a failure that was imminent.

Check first that there are no leaks in the hydraulics (which will also give you the same symptoms), then for air in the system (which I doubt if a simple pad/disc replacement but possible if master cylinder fluid became too low at some point for some reason). Also check the disc(s) are properly fitted and square to the hub.

Sorry I'm not much help, regards

Who's a silly billy then. The front and rear disc's are not interchangeable. Did the rear first (no part no.s on the boxes) then did the fronts. The rear hub size is smaller so as soon as I tightened the wheel the disc was clamped against the hub. Just gonna change all the fluid now.

No I am in the clear , the new discs are binding on the caliper when the caliper  is fully tightened up. Just cleaned up the old discs and fitted them no probs. Stern E-mail will be sent to the supplier.
