Hi All

About 2 months ago te steering rack on my 2005 X-Type 2.0D  started making a 'grinding' sound. (I recognised this as the Steering Rack, as the same thing happened with a Rover SD1 I used to own back in the 1980s). Sure enough, I checked the well and it was low, so I topped it up with fluid, but this was only a temporary fix and it now needs topping up every couple of days.

The car is only worth around £2k so I am loathed to pay £600+ for a new rack, but clearly things can't continue as they are and I have to drive to Plymouth on 30th January - can anyone recommend a solution to me? I have not taken it to a garage yet but I fear the worst. Is the Ford Mondeo steering rack compatable? If so that may bring the price down.

Grateful for any advice you can offer!

Nick
