Anyone else get a little muffled squeak/squawk noise from the auto box, usually when it changes down under load (accelerating up a hill for example.)?  This is my first car with an auto box so I'm not really familiar with the idiosyncrasies of such.  

I gather the auto box is a sealed unit.  Not sure what the "life" of that box is meant to be though.  I have seen figures of 120K miles thrown around.  Mine has done about 67K although it is a 55 plate so over 10 years old.

Hi, sorry can't help with your squeak/noise. My last S which was a late 2002 had done 245k on the same engine and auto box it left the factory with and was still driving fine then I scrapped it. My present S, a 2005 has now done 170k and again all fine!

My car has the ZF 6HP26 gearbox auto, as it says sealed for life

my car is 2004 and its only just covered just over 30k and drives great, like new

the first thing i did, is changed all the oils and I can say when i changed the auto box oil, I noticed a big difference in the way it drove

much smoother and gear shifts were also much better, thats on my car any way

some people say they noticed a difference and some people dont

I would recomend it anyway

as for the squeak, might just be a dry or worn bush and when you put your boot down, the movement could cause it to squeak

Adam I have a 55reg and it also makes a squeak when under load but only on the odd occasion so I just live with it did an oil change couple of weeks ago and have noticed a difference for the better

Interesting...so it seems it is a known issue then.  TBH, it is not something that really troubles me, just wanted to know whether it was a sign of something more serious or not.  Reading the work sheet in the above link....that is a lot of filling and flushing and re-filling!  Love the way it seems to end with draining the gearbox for a final time but there is no mention of re-filling it again!  lol :-)

Is changing the gearbox oil something my local garage can do or is it a main dealer job?  The worksheet mentions " Undo and remove filler plug using special tool 307-452".  If you don't have the special tool, is it not possible?

It is I got the oil and sump and my local garage did the work cost me £176 all together
