Someone just mentioned that a thumping noise from the nearside could be a flywheel problem. Do automatics and manuals have the same system? I have this type of noise on my 2.2 diesel auto and have changed tyres but noise remains My next check was going to be drive shafts etc. Any help would be good.

Cheers

a daul mass flywheel is on a manual and will thump on tick over,  as it gets worse the noise gets louder, but then rev the car a bit and its not to bad? but you then have the thrust release bearing which can also squeal and also rattle /thump.. now a auto box has a torque converter which is different.  not sure what they do as i have never owned an auto.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I will now have a look at drive shafts/ universal joints etc.

Hello, I had the same noise when pushing clutch pedal. It was a flywheel. And one time, when I started to accelerate on highway, I've pushed the pedal to change gear and the pedal became unpushable, I had to pump it couple of times and then it was ok again, then it occured couple of times till it broke down totally, btw, the car broke when I parked after the ride.
