2.7 D S-Type instant coolant loss on motorway. Any help please?

Hi everyone,

New to the forum and seeking help please for my 2007 s-type 2.7 diesel auto.

I was driving to France earlier today and everything was fine until I got on the A16 motorway in France heading towards Lille. When I got on the A25 motorway, I could spot some white smoke in the mirrors. I thought it was coming from the exhaust pipes. No warning lights on the dash so I kept an eye on the whitish smoke but it seemed to have disappeared. A few miles later, approching a slip road, the red light with "engine coolant low" came on. I left the motorway, stoped and opened the bonnet. And I could see a completely empty water tank and lots of steam coming out of the engine bay.I removed the engine protector and there I could see plenty of coolant spread over the engine components. A nearby farmer brought me a large bucket of water and filled the water tank. When I turned the engine on, we could spot a huge water leak from under the engine bay. Called the RAC and got recovered to the nearest garage in the country side. Garage man told me he would look at it tomorrow as it was already late. Though, he suggested it would not be a head gasket as water flow was too big so he's thinking of probably a pipe or hose somewhere?? We tried to spot the leak but no chance at all.

Has anyone experienced such a big water loss as it seems there is no more coolant at all in the engine? What could it be? Can you please help me from your experience? I got to destination very late evening but the car is now 60 miles away from where I am in France. Anyway, if that can be of any help, the car starts fine and even drives as the recovery man drove it up on the truck fine. I started it again to park it at the garage. Temperature guage is down to cold but I guess the sensor is now useless as there is no coolant in the engine.

Many thanks for those who can help me source the cause. Insurance told me they would call me tomorrow to give me a diagnosis when they speak to the mechanic.

Sorry guys for being too long but just tried to explain as much as I could.

Younes

I had the radiator tank split on my Mazda in France a couple of days ago due to thrashing it along the French roads in high temperatures.

It would be worth looking at the hose clips if they are the spring type and replace with Jubilee clamps if they have lost their tension...in some cases they can let high pressure coolant blow past the hose when pressurised and in extreme cases, even pop the hoses off.

Thank you Trevor for the info. Had a chatt with the mechanic, told me they were removing bits from the back of engine under the windscreen, said they've probably got something there to look at. He will get back to me at around 4pm to let me know how it goes.

PS. just a question about insurance and breakdown cover while I'm here. Garage had a call from insurance (I'm with M&S Insurance fully comprehensive cover), don't know what they said as French guy didn't understand what they wanted. I know for sure (well I think) I won't have to pay anything for recovery. But do you guys have any info about parts and labour? Would the insurance company pay for them or do I have to?

Cheers

Update... Had a call from RAC and was told it's a hose that failed somwhere and it would cost around 400 euros to fix. Garage ordering part now and car should be ready for Friday to collect. May be some good news as was also told RAC would also share the labour cost (???) wait and see...

It's a shame really, s-type is a real joy to drive and this one is simply fantastic. Hardly hear the engine when Windows are closed and sounds like a petrol. Just had the cam belt replaced at sevenoaks jag. Any thoughts of what could've happened then?? Don't believe it's related but who knows??

Update... Problem now fixed! French guy called it "water box". Was that the "octopus"? Anyway, faulty part was a big black plastic thing that has around 6 hoses going in and out of it and it split into 2 parts hence the water flow underneath the car and up into the insulation foam. Got the part from Jaguar Lille for 43 euros and there we go. The lad fixed it in an hours time. It took him 2-3 hours to spot the leak though. Anyway thanks for reading and should you be concerned, you know where to look now: it's right in the middle of the engine, on top, under the insulation.
