Changing Rear Pads

Featured Replies

A quick question - changing rear pads with the EPB.

Park car, place gear selector in "P", remove ignition switch.

EPB activates?

Jack up the car.

Remove wheel and gain access to caliper.

My question is - if the EPB is activated and pressure is applied to the brake pads/disc, then how can I remove the old pads and push the pistons back in?

I haven't got any form of manual for the wee beasty (2.5 V6 Auto Saloon)

erm

me thinks you need to take EPB off  AFTER putting some in front of the front wheels

I use wooden blocks the cat won't  move

Hi Richard,

Michaels right, block the front wheels and disengage the EPB before removing the calliper. Your S Type is the same year as mine and I had to put the car into Neutral and leave the key in the ignition to keep the EPB released while I was testing/replacing a speed sensor.

You'll need a wind back tool to rotate the piston back into the calliper - do not try to simply push them back you may damage the calliper. See the attached for your use, I got this from a fellow member and have acquired some other useful goodies in the same way. Let us know if there is anything else you think you need.

Also, please make sure you follow the correct guidance on re-setting the EPB after you have changed the pads.

Cheers,

Steve

If you push down on the parking brake handle as you switch off the ignition, the EPB will remain off ie. relaxed until you sitch the ignition on again.
