Hi all

I’m a fairly new jaguar owner and loving my car despite having to sort a number of issues with the suspension. After 6 months of having the car  a loud noise developed on my drivers side which after inspection by the garage I was advised to replace the bushes and arms ( was also an advisory on last MOT) which I did at great cost, however, the noise was still there afterwards though had switched sides and the garage then advised me that I need to now replace the shock absorbers and the springs. With a heavy heart and an empty purse I have agreed to get this done but the garage are struggling to locate 2 suspension springs. Apparently mine are rusty and should be replaced at the same time as putting in the shock absorbers but they have only been able to locate 1 spring through jaguar. Jaguar have advised that there are no springs available worldwide for my XK convertible and we have to wait for the next batch to be made. Whilst my garage can find used parts on line they don’t recommend replacing with used. Any suggestions please?

Hi Laura and Welcome to the Club,

Do you know how badly rusted the springs are? Surface rust is not unusual and they would have to be severely pitted / 'deeply' rusted to warrant replacement. Given the age of your XK it seems a little unlikely that they are that far gone - I have only ever had to replace a spring if its been broken. Do you trust the outfit that is doing this job? Can you share any pictures of the springs?

If you can I would suggest you get the springs checked over by a local Jaguar Independent if at all possible.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks Steve. I know that the garage say they are rusty but don’t think they are that bad so perhaps should just get the shock absorbers replaced and keep the existing springs.  I will check with my hem. They are not jag specialists but have a very good reputation locally and must admit I worry  if I give the car to jaguar that the costs may zoom up.

Hi Again Laura,

Fully agree, dealership prices can be outrageous and a good indie will save you a lot.

Just a thought, Kwik Fit offer a free suspension check covering both the shock absorbers and springs - if the car can be driven at present - they could provide a good second opinion (and quote).

Great idea. Thank you. Will make an appointment as second opinion always good.
