XKR motor surging??

Just bought a 2004 XKR. Lovely car. Only niggle is the motor tends to surge on gentle acceleration and below 2000rpm. Dead easy to use the J gate manual selection to drive the car smoothly,  but would like it to be smoother in D and understand the problem if pos. The motor runs sweet as a nut, no sign of being out of tune.. So car runs smooth through town, and no probs under acceleration. It's just a small band of throttle setting eg going up a gentle hill.. Any clues gladly received!! Richard
