I have a 2004 2.5 S-Type. The engine warning light has come on along with the amber light to the left of the the message centre. The message centre is displaying "Restricted Performance" intermittently Could this be indicating that the car may require a service or is it a sign of a more serious problem. The car appears to be driving as normal?

Is the car due or overdue a service? It could be a minor electrical problem as it's intermittent or could be more serious. Whatever it is I suggest you get it to your service agent and get it checked out a.s.a.p. Never wise to ignore warning lights or messages.

Colin

Hi, I had exactly the same with my 2002 3.0 SE S-type. The problem turned out to be a fault with one of the two knock sensors that monitor the firing of the engine, they are located one on the side of the engine and the other on the top in the vee of the cylinders, the latter being the more difficult to get at and consequently the more expensive to replace, sadly mine was the latter. A full account of the whole affair including cure and cost can be found on The Jaguar Owners Club Members Only forum first posted by myself on the 4th July this year with the last posting entered on the 17th July under the heading of Engine Malfunction light on (S-type). Hope this will help, best wishes and good luck with getting your car put right, Geoff.

Good luck with getting it fixed KJO.

Had a diagnostics check done and the problem was a short rubber pipe connected to the rocker box cover leaking air. There maybe a problem with the oxygen sensors and that it would require a more in depth diagnostics check to confirm this.

KJO,

That doesn't sound too bad! Oxygen sensors would be a bit more of a headache, a family member had to change a couple on her Toyota Rav 4 and they cost about £150 each. Fingers crossed its just the rubber hose though. Good luck.

Adam.

Agree with Adam and hope it is just the short pipe, otherwise could prove a little expensive. Have you had the pipe changed and has it cleared the restricted performance message, the engine malfunction icon and the amber light? My guess is that if the warnings were intermittent and not constant it was probably the pipe. Good luck and best wishes, Geoff.

Had the pipe replaced on Monday and had no warning light since. So keeping my fingers crossed. Really do not suspect the oxygen sensors are playing up as she is averaging 31.4 mpg with a mixture of urban and rural driving (must say more rural than urban).

Good stuff, hope it stays that way, happy driving, Geoff.
