Hi Guys, I am new to the forum, if this has been discussed before forgive me.

Yesterday,,when I tried to engage drive to move away, the Lever refused to budge from park.

I tried various, like turning the engine off and on again, stamping on brake pedal, revving the engine, after about 5 minites it responded as normal, and remained normal over a number of stops / starts.

This morning it was ok, but when I stopped after an hour or so,when I tried to start again I had the same problem and again it responded after about 5 minites.

If it makes any difference, I have  XJ. V8 4.2 Sovereign  thanks bilmac

William,

I know it sounds silly, but is your battery ok ? these problems seem to start occurring when the battery is on it's way out , it might be worth trying an alternative one to see if it makes any difference .

or you could try some of these suggestions :

Thanks for that Trevor. While the car has been perfect with no problem selecting drive, I have been able to remove cover and identify how to over ride . Just in case it happens again before I get it sorted later this month. Thanks again, William

Sounds like the gear selector bolt has worked itself loose. I had the same problem on my 2003 XJ6. You need a new bolt fitted. Fairly straight-forward. Hope this helps.
