  1. I once did nearly 300km in darkest Mozambique in a Disco TD5  with no effective alternator. Just make sure no lights, climate control etc for the journey. Maybe best to lower one window a little to avoid the misting issues that Vic had.

  2. If the warning lamp has come on then I suspect that it will need to be removed and cleaned physically rather than just a liquid cleaner. AFAIK, you add the cleaner fluid to the fuel. The problem is that the EGR only opens up from around 1700rpm, so you'll just burn it mostly all away in normal driving without it entering the unit, You might like to consider an EGR delete (I have done that and never had a problem)

  3. I agree with Big John about the Jaguar dealer. They will have probably come across this issue and be able to carry out a fix.

As an alternative, I have a plug-in for the OBD port, it is a cheap one which works on bluetooth with my Android phone and when linked with the "Torque Pro" app it will show me the fault codes whenever I get limp mode. This has occurred once a while back, can't remember the exact codes, but it was linked to turbo boost pressure. It went away when I stopped and restarted and has not come back so far.

Please do keep us posted on the outcome, it is always useful to know.

  4. Just seen this post now. I also have a 2014 Sportbrake and had similar problems. It is the internal door switch. I tried to do it myself as the replacement switches are relatively cheap, but I found I needed an octopus to help me hold everything together. A number of posts describing this as an easy task are misleading, it is definitely NOT easy, and I am a Mechanical Engineer.

I took it to the JLR dealer who sorted it out within a couple of hours. The door lock internal mechanisms are fiddly and will fail occasionally.

  5. I also feel that it is a voltage/battery issue if the problem appears after the Jag has been sitting for a while. To confirm this, why don't you buy one of those Voltage/USB plug in units from Halfords (less than £5) and see what happens to your voltage? I think if it drops below about 12.2v after an hour, you might have a battery problem.

  6. This morning  I got my door-lock changed at the dealer and on the way home, my Satnav screen started to wander all over the map.  I noticed a screen button "cancel browse mode", so I touched this and everything returned to normal. Then a couple of minutes later, the same thing. I've never noticed this before in the 2 years I've had the Jag. The handbook shows the "cancel Browse mode" button, but I cannot fathom how the "browse mode" is initiated in the first place. I don't want it and would like to know if it can be eliminated permanently.

  7. I had water in the wheelwell of my sportbrake when I got it a couple of years ago.

I have resolved this with a tube of black sealant from Halfords.

I realise that the root cause are the air vents behind the rear panel, but my method stops any water getting down to that area.

The photo shows where I applied the sealant. The side drain channels adjacent to the rear window have a gap where they join the lower channel section. Water will pour through this gap down past the vents. If there had been an overlap then the problem would not have arisen.

The sealant has done the job for me and the boot is always bone dry.

    Hi Steven,

I know exactly what you’re talking about!
I hadn’t owed a car  between 1983 and 2018 - loads of (some very nice) company cars, driving roughly 40K  miles a year, but I always wanted an XF (above my pay grade!!!), it had to be a red (claret) one and a good spec.

So when I retired, I found a 2011 XF-S Portfolio, in claret, listed at £16K, biggish mileage, but looking perfect (although the wheels needed, and still need, a refurb).

Actually bought it for £13K (nothing to trade in) and have enjoyed every single second with it - I had high expectations after all those years, but they were well and truly exceeded.

I can’t pretend it had all been plain sailing, there have been costs along the way, but the bank isn’t broken yet. It now needs a new rear coelom and there’ a leak somewhere in the aircon which hasn’t had a noticeable effect. Also needs a second set of rear wishbone bushes. Worst hit was a crack cam cover at about £13K

    Joy is still undiminished though!
    Enjoy your XF!!!

Ouch that was a very expensive cam cover!

  9. Did it the other day to modify the wash water pump connections (cut the electrical connecting cables and fitted some spade connectors to stop the potential expensive problem of water ingress to the fuse box) From memory (and this can be difficult these days!) First remove the wheel. There are 4 x bolts which require a 10mm socket, 2 each side at the bottom. The one on inside nearest the cabin is in a recess and at 45 degrees. They come out easily enough. Then there are several plastic clips held in place by plastic screws. These are around the inside edge, and you can easily see or feel these. Then you just need to wriggle and wrestle the wheel arch until it comes out. If you do this, be sure to read all about "wash water pump problems" and do as I did.

  10. Hi Stuart, I've a 2014 Sportbrake and it has the factory fitted tow hitch. The hook section and retaining bolt are retained in the wheel well space and are kept in a purpose built polystyrene foam casing. I bought the jag from a dealer and they took great effort to show me how to  attach and remove it (quite straightforward). When I suggested he just leave the tow hitch fitted he looked at me and said, "this is a Jaguar you know, only show the tow hitch when it is being used"

  11. I bought a "cheap" bluetooth ELM327 I think around £15 and got the "Torque Pro" app on my android phone for £2.50. Definitely the way to go. You can choose how many dials with whatever information you wish. In my example below the engine is still cold so coolant is at ambient. There is a thread on the Torque Pro forum for DPF readout if you wish that info.

  12. I'm reading this thread with great interest as I have recently fitted an ELM327 mini unit and with the Torque App, I can view my Coolant Temperature and DPF Soot Level with the assistance of some nifty programming by a Torque Pro forum member. I've a 2014 Jaguar Sportbrake, 2.2, 200hp version, done almost 40000 miles.

What I've noticed with DPF soot level is that it goes up or down dependent on driving conditions. For example when I first got the programme showing, my soot level was 23 g/m3, but after a steady run of around 30miles (around 1500rpm) this dropped to 5g/m3. A bit of stop start and town driving then increased it up to 7g/m3 and that is where I am at the moment.

On the attached photo the car hasn't yet warmed up so the temperature is a bit low at 48C. Also my hand was a bit shaky with the camera. The top indication is the Soot Level, the bottom one Coolant Temperature

If anyone is interested in showing these figures on an Android smartphone, pm me and I can show the links.
