  1. Thanks Trevor, The rack bolts are the only thing I am honestly worrying about! I will be doing them in a couple of weekends so plan to soak the bolts overnight before I give it a go! Pics to follow.....
  2. I think bigger wheels tend to make Jags (or any big Euro saloons) like drug dealer cars, just need privacy glass for the full effect lol!
  3. Morning chaps, Our drivers door check strap on our '00 XKR is a bit iffy, the bolt onto the chassis leg is loose and when tightening it just spins so I can't tighten it up - As a result, I cant remove it either! The noise on opening the door is awful! - Anyone know if its a captive nut in there? Problem is, I can't get in there to clamp or hold anything and can't seem to access it from inside the car. Has anyone else seen/had something similar? Is there a trick I am missing? Any help or direction would be great, cheers
  4. Not done one on yours but this was an issue on my XKR so worth checking and also cleaning the connector with electrical cleaner. Wheel speed sensors are a pain in the !Removed!, if I could bypass them, I would!
  5. Hi Chris, did you replace the short loom from the speed sensor to the connector? - This could be the issue, so always worth checking for continuity...
  6. Just an update, had the gearbox oil, filter and gasket done today on the XKR. Wow, what a difference! shift changes are so MUCH smoother and quieter, result. If you have not done this already, I highly recommend it!
  7. I would love to attend and catch up with like minded Jag folk! Please add me....
  8. Hi Chaps, On my 2000 XKR, the MOT had an advisory for play in both front lower ball joints - this is felt with heavy braking and also increased tyre wear on the inside edges. I can't find any play or movement in any of the other bushes or upper ball joints so I have for now just ordered two lower ball joints to replace. I have access to a press, but I am looking for a guide to help me along the way. On researching on the tinterweb, some folk mention having to drop the steering rack - Is this the case? Any feedback would be appreciated :)
  9. If its a plug in tuning box, personally I would steer clear, they are a device that fools the ecu to allow more fuel in = power. Seems good but can often lead to other issues and the fuel economy claims are seldom anywhere near the claims. Best spend the cash on a custom map that is tailored to your needs (performance and economy)
  10. Well, I have bought Mercedes spec oil, filter and seal as its the XKR for about £120 (through my trade account) Its being changed by a local specialist Bruce Cousin for labour only at £85, so just over £200 all in. Happy with that and a bit more peace of mind that its done.. I did the engine oil and filter last weekend, really easy job too
  11. Hi Peter, Sorted it now, cleaned the contacts again with a rubber eraser, all working perfectly. You can't get replacement buttons for the early remote's sadly as they have contacts in the moulding, the later 01> don't hence cheap rubber replacements. Main thing is its working at 20ft from the car, great stuff! Oil change planned for tomorrow and its going in for fresh gearbox oil and filter next Thursday, coming together nicely!
  12. Hi, The remote that came with the car works - sort of, boot and lights is fine, door unlocking and locking was sluggish and you had to press hard. So as the buttons were worn, we bought an almost new one. Programmed in the new remote but locking and unlocking is still difficult and the wife can't manage it (!Removed! nails) so I am still in the doghouse!. Its locks/unlocks fine with the key, but upon more reading, the ignition flap looks like its still half open with the key out. Any idea if this is linked to my issue? I am going to get some WD40 in there in the morning, should it be visibly closed with the key out? Also plan to re-clean the key circuit board with electrical cleaner. It seems that these early remote's are a pain as they don't have switches, just contacts. If anyone has any thoughts on the above, please feel free to share!
  13. Hmmmm Mk2 3.8, or maybe the series 1 XJ6, lovely!
  14. Just done this ^^^^ on mine, got it working but my key pad is pretty naff. I can't find new replacements pads for the early fobs, just the 2000> models so bought a nearly new complete fob with the same code/frequency and will sync that one instead (at least I have a spare now!). Its worth noting that the during the above process it might not actually beep, but the led on the gear selector will still flash when going through the process so I used that to know it was working.
  15. Wow, thankyou so much. I will have a good read once I do my engine service today. Cheers
  16. Hi Jim, Thanks for the comments, as per the op, they quoted me £300 to change he gearbox oil alone, I do my own engine servicing and I would like to find out which MB box it is so I can buy the filter and gasket from them as its a better price (assuming its the box I think it is!). I think these chaps just think they can charge what they want! - Crazy Cheers
  17. Hi all, On my '00 XKR, I would like to change the gearbox oil at the same time when I service the engine this weekend. Having read it can be a tricky process, I thought best to seek advice from a local (to me) 'specialist'. I called them to ask for advice and costs and was quoted over £300 just for the gearbox oil change! They were also really resistant to offer any general advice unless they were charging for it which came across as pretty arrogant, insisting that as I was not a specialist how could I possibly understand anything about Jags! I do all of my own work on my cars on race bikes as I am an Ex-Vehicle tech. I do have a couple of questions that hopefully the JOC members could help with. If you could give me a steer, that would be great: Does anyone know the type of MB gearbox used in the XKR (Gearbox code)What fluid could be used. I know Jag stuff is recommended but what is the oil specification as £25 plus VAT per litre seems very steep when I need 6 of them. I have maintained Porsche's for years and they are a fair bit cheaper for all service parts, which I thought was pretty surprising! Thanks chaps
  18. Scun7horpe, North Lincolnshire or South Humberside depending on how posh you think you are!
  19. Hi all Following my newbie thread, I picked up my new (to me) XKR this morning. Pacific Blue (I think), 2000 model....Its got some cosmetic bits to do, but pretty chuffed. What's good: Awesome engine, sport mode is comparable to my Honda Fireblade - wow! Its clean and drives really well Great colour and looks original so a happy camper All of the electrics seem to work! (even the windows now I reset them!) Stuff to do..... Refurb the front seats, lots of cracks on the seat bases A couple of blisters on the rear arches, mudflaps now removed and going to get this done asap Key remote went flat so needs recoding to the car After a few miles driving, I got the ASC/ABS warning intermittently, possibly grubby rear wheel sensor so plan to remove and clean first then run the codes to be sure.... Give it a service (engine & gearbox oil and filters), its due Getting settled in on the 60 mile drive home was steady, but such effortless power and so easy to drive. Things that I don't like: Why are ABS wheel sensors sooooo expensive, £80+ each when a ford one is £14, is this Jag Tax? - They do the same thing after all! The front numberplate looks out of place, its a real shame as the front end looks so clean without it fitted! The muppet that fitted the new tyres used a windy gun to fit the locking nuts, resulting in ruined locking key, great. Going to get them removed and replaced with regular nuts, far less hassle imho. Great car tho, hopefully we will get on like a house on fire!
  20. Blimey, just gone through a few of the videos on the BBC website, its truly devastating :( .
  21. Hi all, Well deal done, what an amazing engine, V8 4.0 Supercharged, 360bhp!! The car has a couple of cosmetic jobs needed, stone chips and one blister on the rear wing (bracket where the dirt traps). Plus the front seats need refurbing but everything else works, Jag history up to 90k, rear suspension has been removed rustproofed and refitted, handling feels pretty good for such a big car....pick her up tomorrow morning, pics to follow. Found a couple of local Jag specialists too so all good.
  22. Mrs srad34 would state that she was buying it for me, but strangely all of the purchase and running costs would come from my account and she will do the lions share of driving it too, strange that! To update on the search, tomorrow I am going to look at a 2000 XKR that's about 40 miles away, its the right colour (Met Blue) with black interior. Mechanically its apparently sweet, including the gearbox and as an ex-tech, not afraid of getting stuck in and a decent test drive will hopefully throw up any concerns. I have a couple of questions if you chaps could help: The wood section on the top and bottom of the steering wheel is a light different colour to the dash wood trim is dark, I have seen this on another jag, is this from an option? With the exception of the engine and XKR badges, what are the differences with body, brakes and interior to a regular XK8? - Be great to clarify. The front seats are scuffed and cracked on the base so will need to be sorted, but they are heated so big bonus points!.- Are there any recommended restorers on the forum you could point me towards? Cheers guys
  23. Thanks Peter! We are looking for a Black or metallic Blue one, personally I want a coupé rather than a convertible but the wife has to approve so we shall see!
