My 2004 2.7 Diesel Sport S Type always starts first time but I've noticed on very cold mornings where the temperature is near freezing, 3 degrees or below, the idle is very lumpy as if one or more cylinders isnt firing properly. As soon as I drive off, everything is fine and once the engine has warmed up it idles smoothly.  When the temperature is warmer, idle is fine at start up.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what is causing the issue.

Good morning, Harvey,

I think your S type is a bit like me and doesn't like cold mornings. <_<

What you have suggested is a possibility, but rather that starts replacing expensive bits I would  give the system a Terraclean service, which cleans out the fuel system and is very beneficial to diesels.

I had it done to mine earlier this year, and it cost me £114 --  it has probably gone up since, but it did make a huge difference in performance and mpg.

Regards

Peter.

hi peter could it be the glow plug

It is possible, Trevor, as the car runs well when warmed up.  The car starts first time, though.

I do not use supermarket fuel, and give the car a taste of Shell performance diesel every few fill ups.  It does make a difference.

Thank you Gents, Terraclean getting booked this week however going to post  something related as new issue appeared.

Well, got the car Terracleaned yesterday and not only has it cured the lumpy idle but the car is running much more smoothly and just nicer to drive. ( It was nice beforehand but even better since.) Thanks for your advice Peter.
