Aaagh, can supermarket DSL cause black smoke and loss of power or am I back to square one ??

Hi Neil,

I have been advised that Supermarket  diesel is inferior to standard forecourt Diesel.  I used Sainsburys diesel for about three months due to some very good 10p a litre offers, and noticed the drop in performance and mpg.  I now use Shell Vitro and although it is about 7p a litre dearer I get a very good mpg - usually about 45 mpg on a longish run [i got 53mpg once] and about 30 mpg knocking around the City.

You may get told that the tankers all fill up from the same depot with the same fuel, which they do, but the Supermarkets do not put in the additives that the big companies do --  Shell, Esso, BP etc.

Regards,

Peter.

Leaky Intercooler hoses can cause whining.

When a garage says it is uneconomical to repair, they are being presumptuous in my opinion.

My old Rover 45 ended up worth less than £500, but I still spent £1000 a year on maintenance, replacing the radiator, alternator, clutch, tyres, etc.. All cars require maintenance, as they wear out. Just because the maintenance costs more than the value of the car doesn't make it uneconomical to repair. The alternative is to buy another car for £000s, and that will also require maintenance.

If you are happy with the car, spend the money to fix it, and you will end up with a car that will last you years. I had my Rover 45 from new for 14 years and with maintenance it never let me down. You might say it was the car equivalent of Trigger's broom.

An tomorrow I trade the old Rover 45 in for a 2008 X-Type SE 2.0. And to be honest I'm a bit scared because I don't know what I'm letting myself in for. I knew every little issue with the Rover. The Jag is a complete stranger. It's like getting a new wife or girlfriend. Lets hope we like each other.

Well after sending car back twice, they replaced split and broken pipes, and unconnected wiring, fixed parking sensors and knocking from rear, car now running great and getting 42 mpg, yeah!!

I have had a similar issue but mine is  a 2.5v6 , took mine to the garage today been told the breather pipe is pinching so waiting a new one...it seems and easy fix so may try it myself and save £25
