New Clutch - what is the best one?

Hello all!

I am starting to have a problem selecting first gear so I am having an educated guess that my clutch is on the way out. The car is a 2002 2.1 V6 petrol with nearly 100k clocked up. It has recently started to clunk through the gears too, so I am wondering is there an after market clutch which is smoother on gear changes? or is the Jaguar the best there is to offer? Can a later clutch be fitted, if so are they smoother? Is it a difficult job to do?

Any and all info will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sean

Hi Skelly,

I do believe we do a dual flywheel fitted and I have heard that it's best to change the flywheel along with the clutch, but I am hoping someone from here will be able to give honest opinions on this and not what I've been told from garages. I have replaced clutches in other vehicles before, but never on a dual flywheel, so I've turned to those with the knowledge. I know some parts from the mondeo fit the x-type and was wondering if this is one of them, like from the ST220 and if it's any smoother on gear changes, as the gear changes have never been real smooth, but lately they really cluck in the first 4 gears when being changed.

Hopefully someone will soon enlighten us with their knowledge. :)

Hello all! I don't know a lot but I know enough. I have the 2.2D x type and was lucky enough to find a solid flywheel conversion clutch kit for £300 on eBay. Brand new and made by Valeo (supposedly a good brand). Yes I am converting to a solid flywheel as I dislike the idea of dual mass. However I just done a bit of research regarding the 2.0 V6 and it seems there is not a solid flywheel conversion for the petrol engine =(. But I did find a good price full kit here:

(http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-X-TYPE-2-0-V6-LUK-DUAL-MASS-FLYWHEEL-DMF-AND-LUK-CLUTCH-KIT-WITH-CSC-/261190810412?fits=Car+Make%3AJaguar%7CModel%3AX-Type%7CCars+Year%3A2002%7CPlat_Gen%3ACF1%7CCars+Type%3A2.0+V6&hash=item3cd02f7b2c:m:m1hevpfSv55TQyDK5eIZcoQ)

As regards to doing the job... I am passing the buck to someone I know with a garage and all the space, tools and knowledge required to do the job. This is not something you can do on your driveway with a jack and axle stands I'm afraid. I believe it is required for the subframe to be dropped and all sorts so not nice. Buy yourself a good priced clutch kit and then find somewhere that do not charge extortionate labour to do the job. Hope I have been somewhat helpful. If I haven't answered a specific question then please ask me if you wish. Or if you think I am useless just ignore me xD haha!

Hi John and thanks for your input!
I have not come across any conversions for the 2 ltr but I am happy to stick with the dual.

The trouble with a garage doing the job is finding one that has done them before and that is reputable, that's why I do all my own repairs. There is a jag specialist in my area but on the two occasions I have phoned them they have not been that friendly or helpful, but if the sub frame has to be dropped then you are right in saying that it's not a job for doing on the driveway, so maybe some phone calls are needed to be made.

Hello Sean.

No problem, just trying to be helpful. I just had my clutch done on my 2.2 diesel, the guy that did mine confirmed to me that the subframe did have to be dropped and it was one of those jobs where nothing wanted to undo. Fortunately he was in a garage with a 4 post car lift so it was some what easy for him. Took him about 5 hours. I would never have done it on the drive way. However I'm glad I converted to a solid flywheel, it is so much softer and smooth. Hope you get yours sorted.

John.
