how high does a temp gauge go, mine is hardly reaching 1/4 way

Hi Brian

The temp gauge usually goes to the halfway Mark, you don't say if the heater is working(ie are getting any Heat into the car).

I'm sure there will be somebody more knowledgeable than myself to give some advice.

Regards Tom

Hi Brian, I have not got an X type to compare however, I have an XKR and the needle usually sits around half way and gets there quite quickly.

Are you getting any heat from your heaters? If not then due to the fact that the gauge is not getting to the centre I would suspect a thermos stuck open (common problem) to most cars. This keeps the water flowing around the cooling system preventing the engine from holding it and heating it up

Thanks Kenny, I had a feeling that was the problem, I do get some heat from the heaters but only for about 5 to 10 minuets then it goes cool.

Will I have to drain the cooling system or is there a way round it and where the hell is the thermostat if you can give me some hints I would appreciate

Hi Brian I hope this helps==

The thermostat is located in a housing in the upper coolant -HOSE-that runs down

the n/s /r of the engine ??  I will try and send a sketch .???

finally got the thermostat changed no different still running cold the heater gets hot for a short time and then cools down, the water in the expansion tank feels warm does not get hot

any ideas please

Hi Brian

You have 2 things I think you can check===Are the 2 electric fans running all the time keeping the radiator too cool.????

They are controlled by a thermostatic switch.???  That would perhaps explain it getting cold after a short time.???

The other thing I think you should check is the pressure-type filler cap in the expansion tank --If this is faulty the

water in the engine will not circulate correctly.???

Just a though I hope it helps.

No mate the fans are not running, and you must be a mind reader  as I'm looking for  a new cap when I got your reply

I have exactly the same problem, my good friend/mot guy/jaguar owner told me to get a thermostat, but not just any old one from a car spares shop, he said make sure it's a quinten Hazell, as the others just stick and not solve the problem, anyway I got a QH just waiting to get it fitted, I'll report back and let you know if it solved my heating problem.

Thanks that would be helpful, I've just ordered a new expansion tank cap as I've been told it could be that I'll let you know if that works, car's don't you just love them
