auto box fluid change

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Had my x type since beginning of September and decided to change oils and filters as not sure about history. All done except auto box fluid. Is this easy or are there any problems?

Cheers

Rod

You surely have never checked your previous thread on this Forum, about what oils needed for an 08 x type.

thanks peter, i will take a look at that.

cheers

For a start you won't be able to Drain all off the Fluid out of the Gearbox, some members who change there Auto Gearboxes Drain what Fluid they can ( i suppose they check the quantity because all of the Fluid won't be Drained ) then they Top UP with new fluid with the same amount that was Drained. Then run the Car for so long , then repeat the process ( Drain as much as they can and then Top Up with new fluid ) i don't know how many times they change the Fluid but the idea is to try and change all off the Old Fluid. With a ZF gearbox seemingly you can remove the bottom (ie Sump ) and a Filter can be changed, but with an Asin Warner Gearbox you cannot change the Filter as this can only be done when the Gearbox is Dismantled for Repair. I would check out a Auto Transmissions Company and get a Quote for changing the Fluid. It's a Great Gearbox and I wouldn't want to compromise the workings of the Gearbox. That's why i got it changed by Mackies Auto Transmissions in Glasgow, there are also paper discs in the Gearbox which can be affected by condensation and i think the Fluid should be changed by Age and not mileage, Mackies suggested 3 to 5 years in between changes.

For peace of mind i would get it changed by a Auto Transmissions Company, for the Asin Warner Gearbox i think it was £153 pounds

for the ZF Gearbox i think it would have been nearly £300 pounds.

Hi Tom,

I will find Auto trans people near here and get a quote. I agree that it is a really good box.

Cheers
