Hi guys

I`m thinking of changing my wheel size to 16" wheels from 17" 235 /45/17 tires, so I can run a higher profile tire to hopefully give a smoother ride and less tire noise , has anybody done this to there jag and will it give a smoother, quieter drive ?

Cheers

So i am going to keep my 16's? I want 17's. Please explain the dynamics here as i am happy to swap mine for a nice set of 17's

I've had 16's and 18's on both my se and sport. I found the 16's to spongy on the se but ok on the sport. The 18's are hard on both cars. Am in the market for a set of 17's

Well I`m hoping to pick a set of 16" wheels & tires up at the weekend , in which case I will be selling my 17" with 225/45/17 wheels and tires ...

I've got 16's on the x type I've just purchased. They very quiet but I'm looking for a set of 18's so if anyone fancies a swap let me know.

Welcome to the Club, Ben.

I had 17"  when I had an X type which were very comfortable, and probably look just about the right size for the X type.

My son has 18" on his x type estate, and they look a touch on the large size, but not too big on the Estate.

Personally, for a more comfortable ride I would stick with the 17".

Regards,

Peter.

Yeah but Peter I'm 27 and trying to hang onto my youth!  :wheelchair:

Hi Ben,

My son has 18" wheels on his x type estate - a bit of a workhorse.   They do look a bit too big, and tyres are far more expensive. He is 45!

I had 17" on my x type and it handled very well.  They suited the car, and  some professional drivers have changed 18" wheels to 16" for better handling!

I would stick with what you have got.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Ben,

Very personal and subjective view of course but I'd stick with what you already have. I don't think bigger wheels do the X-Type any favours at all.

I'm also trying to hang on to what's left of my youth

Operationally, of course, the wheels might need to be bigger if you were installing larger brakes. Lower profile types will, of course, make the ride less comfortable but possibly you might not notice. I certainly did though when I drove an X-Type with 18" wheels back to back with an X-Type with 16" wheels.
