S-Type 4.0 V8 to 4.2 V8 - Differences?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

The 4.0 V8 in my 2000 S-Type has just gone at 148 ish thousand miles due to suspected oil starvation, now I absolutely love my S-Type and would really love to bring it back however finding a replacement engine has proven quite difficult, the 4.2 however is nice and easy to find. Are there too many differences between these two engines to simply lift the 4.0 out and pop the 4.2 in? I'm no novice mechanic but this is my first real dabble into V8 territory, I was mainly a jap guy (LOADS of engine bay to not a lot of engine) so will be attempting it myself if you guys say it is relatively straight-forward.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Also if anyone has a 4.0 V8 that doesn't have the Nikasil bore liners that they want to swap for beer tokens please do let me know, especially if you are in the south east.

Hi Ash

I would say the engine swap is going to be straight forward

the problem you will have is getting everything talking to each other, you will need software like mongoose, to program engine ecu, to your car

a donor car would be best option and can be picked up quite cheap, with a good engine/gearbox, swap engine and gearbox, swap ecu, control modules and transponders in keys and it should run, but you might also end up with mileage from donor car, as i'm sure it stored on engine ecu

seems like a lot of work, might be better just to buy a good 4.2 and upgrade

cheers

joe
