Hi all

I'm a new member and wonder if anyone could help with an issue I have.  A while ago an ABS light came on my dash and when I took it into the garage he said that it was an issue with the drive shaft and the exciter ring (a bit above my head I'm afraid)

He was supposed to sort out and hasn't and it's now failed the MOT on this, no other issues on the car and still great to drive, sailed through on all other points.

He's had difficulty getting a replacement and isn't sure if I will need a new/second hand/reconditioned drive shaft.

Has anyone else had this issue and can give me some advice, is it going to be expensive?  I have a 3 litre S Type

Thanks in advance

Joanne

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) modulates brake pressure on each wheel independently to maintain vehicle stability during braking. The ABS continually monitors the rotational velocity of each wheel anytime the ignition switch is in the ON position and determines if a tire is skidding when the brakes are applied. Only then does the ABS intervene to modulate the brake pressure to the skidding wheel. The modulation continues until the wheel rotates freely. The brake pressure is then restored and the modulate/restore cycle is repeated whenever skidding is detected. This cycle occurs at a rate of several times per second.     and ive never herd of an exciter ring !!!! i think that hes giving you a load of bull.... plus a drive shaft serves a different purpose. to me it sounds more of an electrical problem. (auto electrician) is needed.

In regards to the excitor ring I believe they are actually referring to the abs ring that is atttached and rotates sending a signal via the abs sensor it detects if the wheel is actuall locked up or rotating depending on a magnetic signal from the ring and the abs sensor if the abs ring is Brocken it will not detect the movement and throw the abs lights up

well if thats what they refer too.  its a sensor ring or known as a reluctor ring. cheers ryan for the heads up on that.   dave.
