Code reader

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Rather than pay my mechanic £60 can anyone provide an exact model of code reader I can buy online? A link to one for sale for a decent price would be brilliant.

Where do I actually plug it in? (I am a total novice...)

Thanks

Liam

Hi Liam

OldPeter on this forum uses one which he has always spoken very highly of and it was around £20 I seem to recall.

Plenty on eBay for sale, just make sure it lists Jaguar compatibility, as some will read certain cars and some not.

The OBD socket is usually within reach of the driver....see link for more precise details  http://www.wikiobd.co.uk/manufacturers.php?pt=1

OBD socket should be just under the dash drivers side on the right . I was looking for a code reader myself i have seen these on e-bay don't know how good they are though .          http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MaxiScan-MS509-Car-Diagnostic-Fault-Code-Scanner-Reader-CAN-OBDII-OBD2-EOBD-/191481876688?hash=item2c953590d0:g:Y~8AAOSw0e9Uti2L

Hi

most generic code readers will work

but most will only read engine fault codes, the more expensive ones will also do transmission and abs faults

but if your after just reading engine codes, thats fine

cheers

Joe

That will read the codes and will reset  engine management but it will not turn out airbag lights so if you just want to read the codes it will be fine to be hones a code reader that can do almost everything will be a few thousand pounds for an all singing all dancing 1 you can get some for hundreds aslong as its an OBD11 or OBD you should be ok.

Hi

You can get a mongoose lead with Jaguar IDS/SDD for less than £100,

Jaguar IDS/SDD is what jaguar use, IDS is for pre 2005 cars and SDD is for post 2005 cars, You can do every thing jaguar can as its the same

I have one and its great for reading all fault codes from every module on the car, also program keys and add new fobs

works with all jaguar models, up to about 2010

but if you use just for reading and reseting faults its fine, but if you mess with software updates to transmission , you can brick it, if you make a mistake

I find it very usefull

also if you have the touch screen display, you can also bring engine management faults up on that display and you can even bring up engine fault codes up on you dash board in engineer mode

cheers

Joe

I only have access to a Masisys ms906 sysytem which my friends brought when his other Solus failed,as i dont usually have newer  cars like the jagaur my old odb reader has done all i needed although my hyundai coupe was 2003 and i did happily use my tool, but admit i dont know all scanners and what can read what car, im rebuilding older cars that dont have any computers to tell them what to do an 89 escort cabi xr3i  2 mk1 fiestas a old morris minor lucky to have indicators that flash and 2 mk1 mx5s which never need an odb reader.

My old software palmer performance was on a dell latitude windows XP  which failed so looking for something new and maybe the mongoose lead and software my be just what i need , as its a usb lead .thanks Joe
