I have an S-Type and have to do exactly the same thing. I do not have a garage and have a wire/lead from the house to the car. The boot lid will shut and I have put some extra tape around the cable from the house in the area that I trap in the boot lid seal. It does no harm to the supply lead.  The other thing I have done, because my cable crosses over the path to our front door is purchased a rubber wire concealing strip that has yellow lines on it as a warning. I do not want the postman or anyone else tripping over the supply cable and hurting themselves or "seeing a profitable claim on me."

Best wishes and Regards, John
