What is the correct way to trickle charge the battery?


On your car, positive to the battery terminal and negative to a suitable ground point.

    Just to emphasise what Jim told you Frankie -"suitable ground point" Please don't be tempted to connect to the battery negative terminal.

    The battery control and regulation module is connected at that point and you'd bypass it so the system doesn't note the charge, current flow etc.
