My dad used to own a very nice Daimler V8 4.0 1998 model year. He keep getting a flat battery. After a lot of messing around it was discovered that the heated front screen was permanently on! The relays bases had got wet and this was shorting out the system. He just removed the relays and all was fine. There seem to be lots of relays under the bonnet of all XJ's and they arent very well protected from heavy rain or car washes etc.

I am a new Jag owner (had a 68 E type years ago) and now have a 94 XJS convertible.  Really nice shape, and got it at a good price.  Maybe the good price was a reflection of the fact that the battery keeps going dead.  I am told it's an electrical problem m(short) and I need advice on how to trouble shoot it. 

 

Any suggestions for this newbie?

I don't get oily hands any more, but it sounds a bit like an alternator problem. 

 

If it is not that I would try out the idea that the battery is not the right one for the car.  Jaguars do like the right battery.

 

I thought about getting an XJS but the boot size did not like two sets of golf clubs.
