Hi guys. I'm having a problem with my 2005 AWD X-type. I thought I would be laughing when it got icy (AWD!) but I've noticed whenever its freezing or below, a whining noise is coming from what I thinks the prop.

Can anyone help me diagnose the problem? Is it serious? The cars not high mileage, although its currently getting lots of use.

Thanks for replying! Once I've been driving for about 5 minutes, it becomes quieter but its still there. Getting worried now, the rest of the week is going to include a lot of driving and I can't really afford to be car less :(

Hi - I'm a new member to the club and am a Jaguar 'pensioner', having worked at the X type assembly plant (Halewood) from X Type launch in 2000 though to my retirement in 2005, and was involved in this issue during quality testing in the plant. First of all don't panic, and there's no neeed to stop using the car, the noise you are hearing is 'prop shaft moan', and unfortunately does manifest itself when the temperature drops to around freezing point. We thought we had contained the issue within plant, but obviously we didn't ! The issue was down to the supplier making changes to the prop shaft universal joints, without full verifcation of the engineering change, and more importantly, without informing Jaguar !!!! You can fix this by (I know this sounds a bit obvious) by either swopping the prop shaft or the U/J's, either with a pre or post 2005MY prop - hope this helps - Cheers!

Well, I was about to look for a solution but it looks like someones got here first! Thanks for your input Stephen, its great to have someone with so much Jaguar experience on the forum!

One cold day this week I got this kind of noise. Turn the volume up to hear it, the phone microphone didn't pick up the first noise (slower speeds) that well though the 50km/h whine is very clear.

People on Jaguarforums.com suggested that it might be the propshaft carrier bearing. It's not harmful, only annoying. I haven't encountered it after that one time, but some have had success by greasing the bearing. A new propshaft is fairly expensive. Here's another noise, also very difficult to hear on the video but it's there. Sort of like a pigeon cooing.

That's so helpful Stephen. I have the same issue and was concerned. Feeling much happier knowing it's not a unique problem. Best, John 

Lol mine started moaning and has gotten worse with the weather I love her I will endeavor to do what makes it right the car is strong and lovely I can't do enough for it 

Thank you I heard it at reasonable temps but has gotten worse with winter
