Failsafe Engine Mode

Featured Replies

What is Failsafe Engine Mode and what can be done to clear it.

Failsafe is generally known as an emergency running mode that the car is placed in to enable you to get to a garage albeit, at a reduced engine power output.

There could be many reasons for it going into 'Limphome Mode' and it can only really be efficiently diagnosed by using a scan tool.

I advise you enlist the services of a Jaguar specialist with this one...a good diagnosis can save you lots of money in the long run

There was an episode of "Wheeler Dealers" a few months ago which showed a refurbishment of an XK8 which had a continuing problem with the Limp-home mode.

It was quite interesting to see how Ed China rectified it, which was exactly as Trevor suggested. In the end it was the sensor which was not that expensive, but the diagnosis was the bit that could be.

Slightly away from topic the engine malfunction light on my S Type came on again yesterday, and the engine scanner which arrived on Friday came into use.  Quite easy to use, although I was unable to get the connection correct, and it was too cold to keep trying!  However, I must have frightened it as the light went off when I started the engine again.

Yes Pete, I remember seeing that a couple of weeks ago . It was the air flow meter has I remember it. Anyway, I bought the test meter off e bay and tested today. came up with code PI587. which apparently is the cruise control related, but that is has far has I can go. Would be grateful for any assistance.

Cruise control issues could be something as simple as a brake light bulb out, Air Flow Sensor or an ABS wheel sensor fault.

Worth using the live data function to see what outputs you get and then post them up so I can look at the data if you like.

I have just had diagnostic on again, still showing code P1587. disconnected a few cables connecters and sprayed  WD40 into sockets. Now message has disappeared but fault still there. Car wont rev over 3 rpm. so take it problem still there. Just going to view web sites you sent me.

I take it that the engine in your car is a 3.0L Petrol, Stan.  I had a look around on the internet, and there was a video on You Tube showing how to replace the throttle control, but it was not very good.

It would be worth getting a good local mechanic to have a look if it persists, or if you need to have a part fitted, rather than a main dealer who will charge £130 an hour.

Let me know how you get on.

Peter.

As Peter has stated, there are ways to clean the throttle body and its certainly worth a try but it does seem a quite terminal malady with the throttle bodies on these Jags. Pay careful attention to the electrical contacts to see if there is any corrosion on them when attempting cleaning.

There are companies that remanufacturer like BBA Reman or other solutions are eBay but you could end up buying another faulty one

David Manners Group are not bad and a bit cheaper than the Main Dealers and do have genuine Jaguar parts.  They are quite local to me, but do a good online service.

eBay are sometimes a bit chancy, but there are some Jaguar Dismantlers who also operate an online service.

Peter.

Thank you to Peter AND Trevor, I have done a basic on my fault by removing a few connecters and spraying with WD 40. guess what, did another test and bingo no faults recorded. on a small run appears to be fine. now accelerates above the 2.5k/rpm. so hopefully recovered. Thanks for your help, its nice to know there is some one to turn to out there that doesn't want hundreds of pounds to help.

Regards

Stan
