Drivers Side Wiper Arm Catching Underside of Bonnet

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

well as the title suggests i have been having this problem for a little while and just wondered if anyone else has had the same,it seems to catch on the knuckle of the arm,if so could you please tell me in a "noddy" guide as i am a bit thick when it comes to diy.

I assume the arm can be bent, but should i bend upwards, should i leave the arm on the car to do it or take it off.

The passenger side is fine with a lot of clearence.

Many Thanks

Graham

Hi Peter,

thanks for that.

I have just read on another forum that this seems to be a fairly regular occurence and it was suggested that you could put something underneath the arm to support it and slowly push on it to bend it back down.

I am a bit clumsy when it comes to things like this,so i am a bit wary of doing it.

Thanks again

Graham

Hi Graham,

I have just been out and looked at the wiper arm on my car.  I never seem to look at things like that, normally.  The drivers side wiper arm does look a bit complicated, and expensive to replace, so I would either take great care, or, if you know someone expert with cars get them to do it.  There are some good independent garages about. I use and have done for years a mobile mechanic to do all my servicing and any major repairs, but he does not want to go much further than Sutton Coldfield, generally.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

many thanks for having a look.

I will have a go at bending the arm later, drizzling at the moment, but will not try and force it.

I have a trusted mechanic in Hinckley so if i am unsuccessful i will take it to him to have a look.

I will post back later today.

Thank You

Graham

Hi Peter.

Success!

I placed a block under the arm halfway between the spindle and knuckle and pushed down on the arm about 3 times.Visually i couldn't see any difference until i closed the bonnett and hey presto the gap appeared.

When testing the wiper movement the "clunk" as it hit the underside edge of the bonnett had disapeared as there was now a gap,but the blade now hit the side of the windscreen slightly so i just removed it,repositioned and tested successfully.

I think the wiper system must wear over time which may cause the arm to clip the bonnett.

Anyway i can say it was easier than i thought it would be.

The suggestion for this procedure came from the JEC Forum.

Well now for a clean of my little beauty.

Best Regards

Graham
