Hi Members

having recently purchased my first Jaguar Xtype 2lt D and after only driving 4000milles the clutch failed.

Replacement clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced for just under £1000.

Anyother members experienced similar problem at 54000miles on the clock?

Welcome to the Club, John.

Your post worried me a bit and I hope I don't experience that!  My slightly older s type has done 53,230 miles!!

The only car I have ever had clutch problems with --  burnt out  --  was an Austin A 40 Farina in 1968.

There are lots of helpful members who will tell you their experiences,

regards,

Sound like it got some abuse from the previous owners.

Most DMF's last around 80-120k. Of course, manufacturers do sometimes get rogue components every now and then.

Provided the garage has fitted a good quality replacement, I wouldn't worry about it. Many clutches that fail prematurely do so either from manufacturing defects or from driver abuse. Did they replace the release bearing as well? I'll assume they did as it's part of the kit, but the hydraulic bellows eventually leak and cause the pedal to go loose, and the gearbox needs to come off to replace it, so hopefully that was done at the same time

Hi Peter & Mike, thank you for your replies.

Car has been repaired, and bearing replaced. This time I hope it lasts the expected 80k miles. Work carried out by local independant garage at just under £1k so I hope no further problems that way.

Its also the first car I have had that has had clutch problems in 40 + years of happy motoring, so hopefully also my last.

all the best with your motoring

John
